EDRI Federal Project Inventory:
Neural and Hormonal Substrates of Reproductive Behavior

  1. Sponsor Organization: NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION

  2. Project Title: NEURAL AND HORMONAL SUBSTRATES OF REPRODUCTIVE BEHAVIOR

  3. Project Focus: HUMAN HEALTH EFFECTS

  4. Description: Reproductive success in most species depends on both humoral and neuralresponses acting coordinately. The majority of studies have focused on the male asthe critical component for determining successful outcomes, however, femalereproductive tract function is also significant, and yet under investigated. In the presentwork, Dr. Clemens will focus on the effects of hormones on uterine contractions andthe role of these contractions in the initiation of pregnancy. By recording electricalactivity of uterine muscles, it will be possible to determine what stimuli are important forthe induction of uterine activity around the time of ovulation and whether theseresponses are associated with the release of hormones from the ovary involved in theinitiation of pregnancy. The experiments will provide new and exciting information onthe role of the female reproductive system in pregnancy initiation and reproductivesuccess in mammals.
