Pilot Study to Identify an Approach to Measure Neurobehavioral Effects of Pesticides in Children

Project Purpose

The purpose of this project is to identify a field ready method to evaluate cognitive and/or behavioral endpoints in very young children living in US-Mexico border communities.

Description

This project addresses the need to evaluate young children with potentially high exposures to pesticides. Based on a through review of available methods and approaches, a relatively new questionnaire, the Infant and Toddles Social and Emotional Assessment (ITSEA) was selected. The Spanish version of the ITSEA was evaluated for acceptability and utility within two colonias in the Rio Grande Valley. Thirty nine children between 12 and 47 months of age were enrolled in the study. For each, a parent or other primary caregiver completed the ITSEA.

Accomplishments

A literature review was completed. A study team was assembled and trained. Thirty nine subjects were recruited. The study was conducted. A report is in draft form.

Expected Outcomes

It is anticipated that this pilot study will demonstrate that the ITSEA can be an acceptable instrument for evaluation of young children in communities in the US-Mexico Border region. Specific recommendations for modification of certain standard administration approaches will be provided based on this experience.
