This User Guide and Data Administration Guidelines (UGDAG) document
presents the structure, content, and operating procedures to assist a
wide range of users in effectively employing the capabilities of EIMS. In
particular, this document is organized to meet the needs of the following
four major groups of users:
Persons seeking information about the scientific environmental
information resources of EPA.
EPA scientists and engineers who produce and use EPA scientific
and technical information.
Metadata Librarians and others who manage EPA scientific and
technical information.
Persons outside of EPA wishing to contribute information to EIMS
or use the EIMS database for their own environmental projects.
Chapters 2 and 3 (tabs and teal pages) describe basic background
information needed by users of EIMS, including roles and responsibilities
associated with the use of the system, and support available to users.
Chapter 4 (tabs and red pages) details the use of the system for search
and retrieval of information and Chapters 5 and 6 (tabs and yellow
pages) introduce data entry. Chapters 7 though 15 (tabs and yellow
pages) discuss in detail the data entry procedures for each of the nine
EIMS “Information Objects”. Data entry for the Common Components of
the nine component types is addressed in Chapter 16 (tabs and yellow
pages). Chapters 17 and 18 (tabs and yellow pages) provide guidance
on entering supplemental specialized metadata documentation. Finally,
guidelines for metadata librarians and EIMS Partners are presented in
Chapters 19 and 20 (tabs and purple pages).
This document also contains four main appendices (tabs and black
pages). Appendix A is a glossary of terms and acronyms. Appendix B
lists EIMS file types for downloading. An index and dictionary of EIMS
information items can be found in Appendix C. Lastly, procedures for
loading spatial metadata files are presented in Appendix D.
