EF/GICS Logo Query Form User's Guide

The Grants Information and Control System (GICS) is EPA's management information system for all EPA grant programs. This national system is used by Headquarters, Regions, and States to track, award, administer, and monitor grants.

This is a brief user's guide to the Grants Query Form. Use the form to select a variety of different query options and output options detailed below. Contact Us for additional queries or suggestions that you would find useful.

Select more than one query option at a time to speed up the query and make the retrieval more focused. Only those facilities matching all specified criteria will be retrieved.

Name Search Option

Applicant Name

Enter the complete or partial applicant name, to retrieve all the applicants with that name. Select the "Containing" option when entering a partial name for a better retrieval the first time you access the data. When an "Exact Match" option is specified for an applicant name, do not specify another option; only one applicant will be retrieved.

Award Date Search Option

Award Date Range

Enter the beginning date of the desired range. In the "From" field, your options are:

You can either leave the "To" field blank or specify an end date to the desired range. If you leave the "To" field blank, the query will retrieve all records beginning with the "From" date onward.

Grant Search Option

You may search by Applicant Type or Grant Type.

Applicant Type

Use the pull-down menu to select the code for the desired Applicant Type.

Grant Type

Select either a category of grants or a specific grant program. Select the category desired (Non-Construction, Construction, State Revolving Fund Capitalization, or All) by clicking the appropriate button, or use the pull-down menu to choose a specific grant program. A specific grant program selection will override any category button selected.

Geography Search Option

Select from four geographical search options: ZIP Code, Region, City, and State.

ZIP Code

The ZIP Code entry can be five digits or fewer.

City

Enter a complete or partial city name and a two-character state postal abbreviation. Use the pull-down menu in the state search field to scroll to the appropriate state.

State

Use the pull-down menu to select a state postal abbreviation. A list of the postal abbreviations and the equivalent states is provided.

Region

Use the pull-down menu to select the number corresponding to the EPA Region where the grant recipient's headquarters is located. The states comprising each region are listed for identification purposes.

Text Search Option

Enter phrases of up to 40 characters each. The query will search for the complete phrase entered. You may enter up to five phrases. The phrases are separated by an OR command, so that the search returns grants which contain any of the phrases entered.

GICS Query Results

Select number of grants you wish to view at one time using the pull-down menu. The GICS Query Results lists all grants corresponding to the chosen search criteria, listed at the top of the query results page. For a detailed report on individual grants, click on the underlined Grant Number in the listing.

The retrieved grants will be grouped according to grant type: All Grants, Non-Construction, Construction, and State Revolving Fund Capitalization. The information shown in these listings will depend on the type of grant selected. Only 500 grants will be shown on a page at a time due to system limitations. The 500 grants shown on a page will be retrieved based on the alphabetical listing of the grant applicant name. They will then be separated into groups.

Grant Type:

All Grants

When this option is selected, all three types of grants will be shown, categorized into separate tables under Non-Construction, Construction, and State Revolving Fund Capitalization. The variables in each of these tables match the corresponding descriptions shown below:

Non-Construction

The results table consists of the variables below:

Usage Constraints

Information in the GICS database can be freely accessed through the use of this query. The complexity of the query is up to the user. Queries that return a large volume of data may terminate prematurely due to system limitations. The constraints established for the enviro user account (the query uses this to connect to the ORACLE database) are:

Develop queries that return small batches of data and terminate the session as soon as the queries have been executed, so that others can to access the database.
