Query Form User's Guide

The Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) contains information about releases and transfers of more than 650 toxic chemicals and compounds to the environment.

This is a brief user's guide to the TRI Query Form. Select a variety of different query options and output options detailed below. Contact Us to send additional queries or suggestions that you would find useful.

Select more than one query option at a time to speed up the query and make the retrieval more focused. Only those facilities matching all specified criteria will be retrieved.

Facility Identification Search Option

Facility Name

Enter the complete or partial facility name to retrieve all facilities with that name. Select the "Containing" option when entering a partial name for a better retrieval the first time you access the data. When an "Exact Match" option is specified, do not specify another option; only one facility will be retrieved.

TRI Facility ID

Enter the complete or partial facility identification (ID) number given by the TRI Program System Office. The ID cannot be more than 15 characters.

EPA Facility ID

Enter the complete or partial facility ID to retrieve all facilities with that ID. Select the "Containing" option when entering a partial ID for a better retrieval the first time you access the data. When an "Exact Match" option is specified for a facility ID, do not specify another option; only one facility will be retrieved.

Geography Search Option

Select from four geographical search options: ZIP Code, City, County, State, and EPA Region.

ZIP Code

The ZIP Code entry can be five digits or fewer.

Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Search Option

SIC Code Description

The reporting rule for the TRI covers facilities with SIC Codes in the range 20 - 39. The first two digits in the four-digit SIC define a major business sector; the last two digits denote a facility's specialty within the major sector. Click on "Use TRI SIC Code Values" to retrieve data from TRI or "Use Facility Identification SIC Code Values" to retrieve data from the Facility Identification Tables.

SIC Search

Enter the SIC by typing the first letter of the name. A pop-up menu lists all available SIC Codes. Scroll to the code desired and it will appear in the SIC Code field. If no code is desired, the system will default to "No SIC Code Selected." Click on "Use TRI SIC Code Values" to retrieve data from TRI or "Use Facility Identification SIC Code Values" to retrieve data from the Facility Identification Tables.

North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Code Search Option

NAICS Code Description

The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Code(s) that best describe the business activities conducted at a facility or establishment. NAICS codes are 6 digit numbers used by the Bureau of Census as part of a system to categorize and track the types of business activities conducted in the United States.

The individual digits within the NAICS code indicate different levels of granularity in identifying a business. Here is an example of the granularity the individual digits provide:

No. Example
Digits NAICS Definition / Granularity
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Two 31xxxx Manufacturing
Three 311xxx Food Manufacturing
Four 3115xx Food Manufacturing, Diary Products
Five 31151x Food Manufacturing, Diary Products, (Not Frozen)
Six 311511 Food Manufacturing, Diary Products, (Not Frozen), Fluid Milk

A facility may be comprised of one or more establishments. An establishment is an economic unit, generally at a single physical location, where business is conducted or where services or industrial operations are performed. Each establishment may have a unique NAICS code.

NAICS Search

Enter the NAICS by typing the first letter of the name. A pop-up menu lists all available NAICS Codes. Scroll to the code desired and it will appear in the NAICS Code field. If no code is desired, the system will default to "No NAICS Code Selected." Click on "Use TRI NAICS Code Values" to retrieve data from TRI or "Use Facility Identification SIC Code Values" to retrieve data from the Facility Identification Tables.

Chemical Search Option

Chemical Name

Enter a complete or partial chemical (parameter) name. There can be various common names for the same chemical, so if the name you enter is not listed under that name for the facility, the TRI query will not retrieve a facility that you might want to see.

Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) Number

Use the "Lookup CAS Number" button to select a CAS Number, or enter the chemical's CAS Number in the field.

Search Values Option

Click on "Use Multisystem facility information to perform facility search" to identify facilities, using facility information from all program systems. Click on "Use TRI facility information to perform facility search" to identify facilities, using only TRI facility information.

TRI Query Results

The TRI Query Results lists all EPA-regulated facilities corresponding to the chosen search criteria. You can access the individual facility site reports by clicking on the facility ID. The results table consists of the variables below:

Envirofacts TRI Report

The output is organized by facility, providing the basic site information in a label format, followed by a tabular listing of additional chemical information.

Basic Facility Information:

Click on the "Map this Facility" button to use one of Envirofacts' mapping utilities. More information about additional regulatory aspects of the facility can be found by clicking the "Other Regulatory Data" button.

Additional Tabular Output:

There are several types of tables that you could retrieve: Total Aggregate Releases of TRI Chemicals to the Environment, TRI Chemicals Reported on Form A, Names and Amounts of Chemicals Released to the Environment by Year, Discharge of Chemicals into Streams or Bodies of Water, Transfer of Chemicals to Off-Site Locations other than POTWs, Summary of Waste Management Activities, Chemicals Under Waste Management,Transfer of Chemicals to Publicly Owned Treatment Works, and Non Production Releases.

The Total Aggregate Releases of TRI Chemicals to the Environment table contains the following five fields:

Click on the "Graphic Summary of this Table" button to view the information in a bar chart format.

The TRI Chemicals Reported on Form A table contains the following three fields:

The Names and Amounts of Chemicals Released to the Environment by Year table contains the following two fields:

The Discharge of Chemicals into Streams or Bodies of Water table contains the following four fields:

The Transfer of Chemicals to Off-Site Locations other than POTWs table contains the following five fields:

The Summary of Waste Management Activities table contains the following nine fields:

The Chemicals Under Waste Management table contains the following nine fields:

The Transfer of Chemicals to Publicly Owned Treatment Works table contains the following five fields:

The Non Production Releases table contains the following three fields:

Usage Constraints

Information in the TRI database can be freely accessed through the use of this query. The TRI database contains information for toxic chemical releases by facilities reported to EPA from the years 1987 to 1995. The complexity of the query is up to the user. Queries that return a large volume of data may terminate prematurely due to system limitations. The constraints established for the enviro user account (the query uses this to connect to the Oracle database) are:

Develop queries that return small batches of data and terminate the session as soon as the queries have been executed, so that others can access the database.
