NSF is an independent agency of the U.S. government. Through grants and contracts, NSF initiates and supports scientific and engineering research and programs to strengthen scientific and engineering research potential, and education programs at all levels. NSF's mission is to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; and to secure the national defense. NSF appraises the impact of research on industrial development and the general welfare.
