• Publication: Metabolically Derived Human Ventilation Rates: A Revised Approach Based Upon Oxygen Consumption Rates (Final Report) - The purpose of this report is to provide a revised approach for calculating an individual’s ventilation rate directly from their oxygen consumption rate. This revised approach will be used to update the ventilation rate information in the Exposure Factors Handbook, which serve as a resources for exposure assessors for calculating inhalation and other exposures (National Center for Environmental Assessment).

• EPA Will Be Reviewing and Potentially Revising its Health and Environmental Standards for Uranium and Thorium Milling Facilities - To ensure an open and transparent rulemaking process, EPA will develop a Web site with postings of relevant documents, notices of opportunities for public input to the process, and notices of meetings at which the proposal may be discussed (Radiation Protection Division).

• Annual Report, Office of Science and Technology (2008) (PDF) - In 2008, OST continued its long tradition of ensuring that sound science is the foundation for its work and that stakeholder input is actively sought as we formulate public policy. OST made many advances through collaboration with its regional counterparts; federal partners; and state, territorial and tribal co-regulators. • Regional Public Liaison Program Needs Greater Focus on Results and Customer Awareness (PDF) - The Office of Inspector General (OIG) evaluated the actions taken by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (OSWER) to implement its Regional Public Liaison (RPL) program. • Publication: Land-Use Scenarios: National-Scale Housing-Density Scenarios Consistent with Climate Change Storylines (Final Report) - EPA announces the availability of the final report, Land-Use Scenarios: National-Scale Housing-Density Scenarios Consistent with Climate Change Storylines. This report describes the scenarios and models used to generate national-scale housing density scenarios for the conterminous U.S. to the year 2100 (National Center for Environmental Assessment's Global Change Research Program).

• New from the Office of Pesticide Programs:

  • Pollinator Protection - New Pollinator Protection Web Page and Strategy; Celebrate Pollinator Protection Week.

  • Amendments to REDs for Copper - This page has been updates with a link to a Federal Register notice.

• Participate in the President's community service initiative, United We Serve - EPA's Adopt your Watershed program encourages you to work for clean water by joining with local organizations to monitor water quality, restore habitat, build rain gardens, plant trees, or clean up debris (Office of Wetlands, Oceans and Watersheds).

• Contaminated Soil Waste Repository at East Mission Flats, Idaho (PDF) - We conducted this review to determine if the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) allowed appropriate communityinvolvement and provided adequate notice when selecting the East Mission Flats (EMF), Idaho, repository location; and included flood controls in repository design to minimize potential for releasingcontaminants. • Final Criteria for Acrolein and Phenol - We have published final national recommended water quality criteria for the protection of human health for acrolein and phenol. These updated criteria are based on EPA's Methodology for Deriving Ambient Water Quality Criteria for the Protection of Human Health (2000 Human Health Methodology) (EPA-822-B-00-004) and supersede current recommended criteria for these chemicals (Office of Science and Technology, Office of Water).

• Interagency Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Surface Coal Mining in Appalachia - This page provides updates and background information regarding Clean Water Act Section 404 and Mining Activities (Office of Wetlands, Oceans and Watersheds).

• Publication: Summary of U.S. EPA Dioxin Workshop - Feb 2009 - EPA announces the release of the summary report cumulating the discussion and conclusions from the Feb 18-20, 2009 dioxin draft reassessment workshop held in Cincinnati, OH. EPA and Argonne National Laboratories, through an inter-Agency agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy, convened a workshop that identified and addressed issues related to the dose-response assessment of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) (National Center for Environmental Assessment).

  • GWR Triggered and Representative Source Water Monitoring Guidance posted - The documents provides a simple and straightforward description of the rule, critical deadlines and requirements for drinking water systems and states, and information on monitoring requirements.

  • Ground Water Rule (GWR) Guidance - This document provides guidance to states, tribes, and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) exercising primary enforcement responsibility under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and contains EPA's current policy recommendations for complying with the Ground Water Rule (GWR).

STAG Grant funds are used to build and enhance the capacity of states and tribes to carry out compliance assurance activities within their respective jurisdictions (Office of Compliance and Enforcement).
