Dedicated Teacher Engages Youth in the Benefits of Recycling
Linda Hudson is a teacher who isn't afraid to be an environmentalist and pass on her ideals to her students. Her class' success with cell phone recycling has led to the refurbishing of over seven thousand cell phones for use by families in need in South and Latin America. She is proof that through dedication, a willingness to educate, and guidance, even school-children can accomplish incredible goals.
Hudson, a fifth grade teacher at the Alexander Dawson School in Las Vegas, has designed curriculua that educate kids to the benefits of recycling and sound solid waste management. The curricula stress a brainstorming and problem solving approach to the issues of solid waste reduction, reuse, and recycling.
Linda's approach is one of asking the students thought provoking questions and having them find the answer using the Web as a resource. Her technique allows the students to brainstorm, letting their creativity shine when tackling problems associated with the various aspects of solid waste reduction. Issues such as hazardous materials and waste reduction are just a few of the subjects she has the students investigate.
