Celebrate Earth Day on Sunday, April 22

Picture this: entire cities buried under their own smog and polluted rivers catching fire. These were some of the serious issues facing our environment on April 22, 1970, when more than 20 million people across America celebrated the first Earth Day. Twenty-seven years later, Earth Day is celebrated annually around the globe and on Sunday, April 22, millions of Americans will come together once again to celebrate the accomplishments that have been made and to remind us that we still have improvements to make.

In many ways, the Resource Conservation Challenge (RCC) is an extension of Earth Day's efforts to encourage everyone to conserve natural resources and energy by managing materials more efficiently. Taking actions on Earth Day, and everyday, to prevent pollution, promote reuse and recycling, conserve energy and materials, and work to reduce priority and toxic chemicals in products will help ensure that the world will be better for our children and grandchildren.

Here are some tips on how to mark Earth Day 2007:

Show your commitment to a clean environment. Volunteer for a cleanup in your community or initiate one in your school, on your street, or in other local areas. Invite some of your friends along and in a matter of hours you will be amazed at the sense of accomplishment you feel standing next to all those bags of recyclables and trash! Organize a recycling drive in your neighborhood or school. Collect empty bottles and cans or newspapers and take them to your local recycling center. Not only can you make a little bit of money, but you can help conserve raw materials and energy that manufacturers would otherwise use in producing new products.

Spring clean the green way: Make sure you're properly maintaining home appliances and keeping them clean, which keeps them running at peak efficiency. Remove lint and dust from your refrigerator coil and freezer. Clean up lint around your dryer, furnace, and any vents leading to or from them. Also, change or clean the filter in your air purifier or furnace. This saves electricity, which conserves resources and reduces climate change.

These Earth Day celebration tips exemplify activities encouraged by our Resource Conservation Challenge.
