Basic Information for Building Applications

Coal Combustion
Products Partnership

The use of CCPs in building construction applications is not new. In ancient times, the Romans used volcanic ash in their concrete because the materials in the ash lent strength to the resulting concrete structures. Examples of these structures include the Roman Pantheon and the Coliseum, both of which still stand today.

Coal fly ash has been used as an ingredient in concrete for more than 60 years and U.S. concrete suppliers routinely use fly ash in their concrete mixtures. Bottom ash is utilized in a variety of markets as an aggregate or filler material in construction projects and building products. Boiler slag is used for roofing granules and blasting grit and can also be used for asphalt concrete aggregate, structural fill, granular base material for pavement construction, stabilized base aggregate and for some metalworking applications. Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) Material is most commonly used for wallboard production, structural fill, cement, concrete, and grout.
