Federal Requirements: While the Federal government does not regulate household disposal of unwanted computers and televisions, it does require businesses and institutions to properly dispose (or recycle) these materials. Organizations recycling or disposing of electronics should check state regulatory requirements, which may be different from federal requirements. For information on regulatory requirements applicable to businesses and institutions, see eCycling Regulations and Standards
Selecting a Recycler: EPA does not currently certify recyclers. The Agency does, however, encourage interested parties to ensure that their recycler follows Plug-In's safe recycling guidelines. The following two Web sites have tips you should follow when selecting a recycler:
- The Checklist
for Selection of Electronics Reuse and Recycling Services (PDF) (8 pp, 169K)
provides guidance for procurers of electronics recycling services in
making an informed choice regarding their electronics recycling needs.
It can also help providers of electronics recycling services better
understand the different types of issues facing the electronics recycling
industry.
- To find a program in your community, you might want to start with your state or local government's Web site. Where Can I Donate or Recycle My Old Computer and Other Electronic Products? lists additional sources of information on donation and recycling programs.
