In today’s high-tech world, we are constantly upgrading our computers, cell phones, televisions, and other electronic devices. As a result, many of us are left with old, outdated devices that clutter storage space or are thrown away.
Fortunately, we can reduce this clutter and waste by eCycling—recycling electronic devices. Many electronic devices are made out of recyclable materials such as precious metals, copper, and plastics that can be used again. In addition, eCycling reduces greenhouse gas emissions and conserves natural resources.
Did You Know?
Recycling just a million cell phones reduces greenhouse gas emissions equal to taking 1,368 cars off the road for a year?Recognizing this recycling opportunity, the Plug-In To eCycling program teamed up with AT&T Wireless, Best Buy, LG Electronics, Motorola, Nokia, Office Depot, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Sprint, Staples, and T-Mobile to launch a cell phone recycling campaign: “Recycle Your Cell Phone: It’s an Easy Call.” This campaign encourages Americans to recycle or donate their unwanted cell phones.
Cell phone recycling is easy to do and doesn’t take much time or energy. Many cell phone retailers, manufacturers, or service providers have ongoing collection programs where cell phones can be dropped off or mailed in. Some charitable organizations and state or municipal solid waste program also offer cell phone recycling. In most cases, cell phone recycling is free.
