Summary of 2011 Award Winners Programs
Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation Hall of Fame
As a state agency, one of the main goals of the Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation (TDEC) is to protect public health and the environment from contamination through proper management of solid wastes. TDEC has been a committed WasteWise partner since 1998 and has been awarded WasteWise awards almost annually since 1999. Due to its tireless work to educate the residents of Tennessee and its employees about waste reduction, WasteWise recognizes TDEC with its highest honor as the 2011 inductee for the WasteWise Hall of Fame.
Beginning in 1990, TDEC launched the State Employee Recycling Program (SERP) to engage its employees throughout the Tennessee region. This program enables employees to lead by examplebecoming experts on the importance of waste prevention and recyclingand encourages them to participate in waste reduction initiatives throughout the year. More than 32,000 employees are committed to the program, with this number continuing to grow.
In the past 12 years, TDEC has sponsored several ongoing events, festivals, recycling rebates, and charity runs, including the Great America Cleanup and America Recycles Day. One successful initiative is the Green Cubicle program, which encourages daily tasks for employees to perform to reduce waste. These simple tasks have had a tremendous impact on TDECs waste reduction program. Some examples include: making two-sided copies when printing, maintaining electronic files, using scrap paper when printing, reusing old office supplies, recycling toner cartridges/electronics, and using reusable coffee mugs. Through these efforts, the total amount of TDEC waste prevented, recycled, and composted in 2010 was more than 1.4 million pounds. TDECs 2010 waste reduction efforts resulted in greenhouse gas emission reductions of nearly 2,800 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. In addition, its waste reduction efforts saved TDEC nearly $40,000 in 2010, doubling the amount from 2009.
TDEC plans to commit to its waste reduction efforts in future years, not only by reporting its results, but also by promoting WasteWise at all its events and on its website. It has recruited more than 60 colleges and universities across Tennessee to join RecycleMania. Additionally, TDEC has sent more than 2,000 emails to all departmental employees, other state of Tennessee employees, facility administrators, recycling coordinators, and contractors to encourage them to participate in WasteWise. TDEC has received an overwhelming response from employees, who have been eager to learn more about WasteWise and get involved.
Throughout the years, TDEC has always sought out new strategies to improve its waste reduction program while serving as an excellent role model for other WasteWise partners. The state continues to educate its employees and communities about the importance of waste reduction and prevention. Since 1999, TDEC has won a total of nine WasteWise awards and continues to implement programs and initiatives that can serve as models for others. TDEC is well-deserving of this years WasteWise Hall of Fame award.
Exel Lockport Endorser of the Year
For the second consecutive year, WasteWise presents the 2011 Endorser of the Year Award to Exel Lockport. In 2010, the company actively promoted WasteWise through several outreach events. Exel continues to succeed in communicating the WasteWise message to interested parties by promoting several key values throughout the company, including: delivering excellent quality, motivating its customers to become more successful, establishing clear priorities, acting as entrepreneurs, acting with integrity, and accepting social responsibilities. In 2010, Exel was actively involved in four outreach events and conferences where it was able to present its WasteWise success stories. Through PowerPoint presentations, bulletin boards, and question and answer sessions, Exel was able to demonstrate the benefits of joining WasteWise and encourage other organizations to do the same.
Not only is Exel an excellent WasteWise endorser, but it has also been a successful partner. In 2010, Exel diverted more than 1,900 tons of waste from landfills, resulting in greenhouse gas emission reductions of nearly 970 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. It has been able to communicate and share its best practices regarding waste prevention, recycling, and purchasing recycled products. As a result, Exel has been able to share its experiences to prospective partners and has received positive recognition from other industries as an EPA WasteWise partner. Through all these outreach efforts, Exel employees have been supportive and enthusiastic about their WasteWise partnership and continue to promote WasteWise as a beneficial opportunity.
Better World Books Small Business Partner of the Year
Better World Books (BWB) is the 2011 Small Business Partner of the Year WasteWise award winner. BWB focuses on the collection and resale of books to help fund worldwide literacy initiatives and is also committed to sustainability. In 2010, the company recycled more than 7,500 tons of books, almost doubling the amount of books it recycled from the previous year. In addition, 2010 was marked by dramatic greenhouse gas emission reductions for BWB. Through its waste reduction activities, BWB prevented nearly 100,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions, an increase from about16,000 in 2009.
To help spread its mission of never landfilling a book, BWB developed an external recycling initiative called Reuse First, in which its customers participate during business hours. This program consists of four components and is the primary collection initiative that BWB offers. Reuse First focuses on the local diversion of books by placing a series of collection bins at prominent locations where visibility is high and participation can be encouraged. By the end of 2010, BWB had 46 bins in Indiana and 89 bins in Georgia. These bins generated nearly 760,000 lbs of additional diversion for BWB. In addition, the company is working on a new initiative to encourage individuals to mail their books to BWB for reuse or recycling. This program will begin as the existing bin program continues to expand. BWB promotes WasteWise through blogs, Web, and social media outlets with the hope of encouraging others to participate in WasteWise while improving its own waste prevention and recycling initiatives.
Saint Paul RiverCentre/Xcel Energy Center Midsize Business Partner of the Year
The recipient of the 2011 WasteWise Midsize Business Partner of the Year award is the Saint Paul RiverCentre/Xcel Energy Center (RiverCentre/Xcel). Partnering in 2009 to improve its waste management, RiverCentre/Xcel set a goal of 50-50 in 2to reduce its annual solid waste generation by 50 percent and increase its recycling rate to 50 percent between 2009 and 2011. In 2010, RiverCentre/Xcel achieved its goal, reducing its solid waste generation by 57 percent and achieving a recycling rate just over 50 percent.
RiverCentre/Xcel addressed the recycling infrastructure in the back of the house and in the public areas. In the back of the house, it implemented a color-coded bag system so different waste streams could be easily identified for sorting. In the public areas, it ensured that the recycling containers fit the décor of various areas and included space to educate the public on how to properly sort the materials. The facility used educational posters and brochures to share information on the 50-50 in 2 goal and the recycling program. It began separating organic materials for composting, collecting more than 175 tons in 2010. In addition, RiverCentre/Xcel switched to lower impact alternatives to many disposable food service items, including products with compostable and recycled content and tree-free options.
Toyota Motor Sales Large Business Partner of the Year Award
With 22 locations participating in WasteWise, and demonstrating impressive waste prevention and recycling efforts, Toyota Motor Sales is the recipient of the 2011 Large Business Partner of the Year award. Toyota has made sustainability a way of life and has created a mottosustainable mobilityunder which it continues to develop and manage vehicles and technologies through its life-cycle assessment footprint so that the company delivers the right vehicle, at the right time. Toyota employees are presented with goals for waste prevention and recycling in the companys Five-Year Environmental Action Plan, which commits to long-term targets and then breaks them down to one-year division targets, and eventually facility-level targets.
In 2010, Toyotas waste reduction activities diverted more than 35,000 tons of waste from landfills, resulting greenhouse gas emission reductions of more than 103,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. The company also has made superb efforts to promote WasteWise to employees by initiating waste prevention competitions, creating certificates for each reporting location, and guiding employees through the SMM data management system. Toyota even communicates this message outside the company, sharing at conferences and lectures the lessons it has learned regarding waste prevention and recycling as a large corporation.
Raytheon Company Very Large Business Partner of the Year Award
Raytheon Company is the 2011 WasteWise Very Large Business Partner of the Year. When Raytheon became a WasteWise partner in 2002, it only included a couple sites in New England. Now, the company boasts WasteWise participation across the country, including 45 facilities in 42 locations. In 2010, Raytheon diverted more than 10,000 tons of materials through reuse, donation, and recyclingpreventing more than 35,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalentand saved $2 million through its waste reduction programs.
Raytheon implemented multiple programs to reduce paper, including utilizing electronic purchase orders, invoices, and payments; supplying direct deposit statements to employees online; setting default printer settings to double-sided; and using Web-based trainings. The company also initiated the Serving Up Sustainability program at its dining centers, using reusable dishes and silverware instead of disposable, eliminating polystyrene, and implementing composting programs at some sites. In 2010, Raytheon Company composted nearly 900 tons of organic materials.
Cannon Grange #152 Inc. Nonprofit Organization Partner of the Year
Cannon Grange #152 Inc. (Cannon Grange) is the recipient of the 2011 WasteWise Nonprofit Organization Partner of the Year Award. Cannon Grange, a small, nonprofit organization in the town of Wilton, Connecticut, achieved a 77-percent waste diversion rate in 2010, marking a 5-percent increase from 2009. During business meetings and other events, Cannon Grange ensures that as many materials as possible are recycled or diverted from the waste stream. In 2010, Cannon Grange stopped purchasing polystyrene cups, paper plates and bowls, and plastic cutlery, using china and silverware instead. This switch prevented over 1,500 pounds of waste. The organization also uses washable tablecloths instead of disposable ones.
Cannon Grange focuses on waste reduction and recycling during its annual Agricultural Fair, which has over 3,000 attendees. To advertise the event, the group uses reusable wood signs. Both fairgoers and food concessioners are encouraged to recycle as much as possible during the event. In 2010, Cannon Grange eliminated paper plates during the event, instead using aluminum foil (which can be recycled) to wrap hot sandwiches. Drinks are only sold in recyclable bottles or cans. Cannon Grange also focused on diverting food waste from the waste stream and composted or donated more than 500 pounds of food waste in 2010.
Richland College College/University Partner of the Year
For the second consecutive year, Richland College continued to maintain high environmental standards and has been awarded the 2011 WasteWise College/University Partner of the Year Award. The message of the colleges GREENRichland program is &l#147;honoring the resources we have now and making strides to ensure they are still available one hundred years from now. In 2010, Richland communicated this message to faculty and students to help the campus community become more aware of its carbon footprint. Richland encouraged all employees to utilize the WasteWise website as a source when computing any figures pertaining to recycling and when seeking resources about the process of recycling. Additionally, the college built a new recycling station/education center to help the campus community and visitors learn about waste prevention and recycling, as well serving as a dropoff point for paper, plastic, glass, and food for recycling.
Richland actively participates in events, including the RecycleMania program and a local program that sells and donates campus materials such as computers, TVs, and plastics. GREENRichland also conducts its own events, including the Art, Science, and Sustainable Community Symposium and the National Teach-In on Global Warming. In 2010 alone, Richland recycled more than 754 tons of materials, including construction and demolition debris, concrete/cement, metals, and paper. Its waste reduction activities in 2010 resulted in greenhouse gas emission reductions of more than 2,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.
Orange County, Florida Local Government Partner of the Year
Orange County, Florida, aggressively increased the scope of its WasteWise partnership and its commitment to waste reduction, allowing the county to earn the WasteWise 2011 Local Government Partner of the Year award. When Orange County started as a WasteWise partner in 2007, it only included two facilities. In 2010, it expanded its activities to more than 25 facilities, including local parks, the county courthouse, and local government offices. Orange County developed a WasteWise coordinator program, with volunteers within each building who are committed to being waste reduction leaders by collecting data and educating employees about waste prevention and recycling.
Orange County implemented an extensive in-office food waste composting program, using both a worm composter and an automatic composter and reusing both newspaper from the office and sawdust from an employees home for in-vessel composting. Employees are free to take the compost for home gardening use. The Environmental Protection Division has also started a paper reuse program in 2010 where employees are encouraged to reuse paper that has only been printed on one side. Additionally, Orange County started offering services to help green community events, helping to plan the Global Peace Film Festival and make it a Zero Landfill event. Through these efforts, Orange County diverted more than 1,400 tons of waste from landfills, increasing its diversion rate from 5 percent in 2009 to 66 percent in 2010.
Hutchinson Correctional Facility State Government Partner of the Year
Hutchinson Correctional Facility is recognized as the 2011 WasteWise State Government Partner of the Year. The facility has undertaken a number of initiatives to prevent waste, reuse materials, and recycle. In 2010, Hutchinson Correctional Facility diverted nearly 380 tons of materials from the landfill through recycling or waste prevention, representing more than three times the amount diverted in 2009. In 2008, Hutchinson Correctional Facility began a quilting program in which inmates use old clothing to make quilts for the homeless. The program prevented more than two tons of textile waste in 2010. In an effort to reuse old officer boots, Hutchinson Correctional Facility began donating them to a local ROTC branch in 2010. Instead of purchasing new cardboard boxes to pack out departing inmates, the facility reuses existing cardboard boxes. Last year, Hutchinson Correctional Facility worked with the Kansas Department of Corrections to allow all correctional facilities in the state to use existing cardboard boxes as well. The facility has saved more than $5,000 through this program. In addition, it has a crew of inmates that disassembles mattresses from area landfills into their separate components, including wood, cotton/foam, and springs, which can then be recycled.
United States Postal Service Western Area Federal Government Partner of the Year
The 2011 WasteWise Federal Government Partner of the Year award is presented to the United States Postal Service (USPS) Western Area. The USPS Western Area continued to make great progress in its waste prevention and recycling programs. In 2010, the USPS Western Area diverted more than 37,000 tons of material, avoiding more than $1.5 million in disposal costs and earning more than $1.6 million in recycling revenue, despite the absence of strong recycling markets and infrastructure in many areas.
In 2010, the USPS Western Area expanded its zero-waste initiative that began in 2009, with all districts sustaining or increasing their waste prevention and recycling activities. Instead of landfilling or recycling excess and used equipment still in good condition, the USPS Western Area sold the equipment to the public. The organization also set duplex printing as the default on all prime printers. In addition, the USPS Western Area added customer lobby mail recycling at more than 200 locations. In fact, many rural and smaller post office sites serve as the mixed paper and cardboard recycling resource for entire communities. These and other efforts resulted in greenhouse gas emission reductions of more than 818,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent for the USPS Western Area in 2010, which is equivalent to taking more than 149,000 cars off the road for a year.
Herman Miller, Inc. Gold Achievement Climate Change
The winner of the 2011 WasteWise Gold Achievement Award for Climate Change goes to Herman Miller, Inc. Herman Miller has committed to becoming carbon neutral and achieving zero waste to landfills by 2020, and the company is making great strides to meet its goals. In 2010, Herman Miller recycled and composted more than 9,500 tons of waste, preventing over 42,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, equal to removing more than 7,600 passenger cars from the road for a year. In addition, Herman Miller began calculating its total greenhouse gas emissions in 2007. For fiscal year 2011, the company achieved a 72-percent reduction in its carbon footprint, surpassing its goal of 65 percent.
The company also has a Design for the Environment (DfE) guideline, which requires an assessment of a products carbon footprint during the design and development phase. Herman Miller is also committed to reducing the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the transport of its products. The companys Transportation Impact Reduction Team, part of its Environmental Quality Action Team, earned recognition from EPAs SmartWay Transportation Partnership as a Certified Carrier. In addition, Herman Millers local fleet has a no idle policy.
Genzyme Corporation (Massachusetts) Gold Achievement Construction and Demolition Materials Reduction
Genzyme Corporation has continued to significantly improve its waste reduction efforts and is well deserving of the 2011 WasteWise Gold Achievement Award for Construction and Demolition Materials Reduction. As one of the worlds leading biotechnology companies, Genzymes objectives for each of its projects is to recycle at least 95 percent of its waste materials. In 2010, the company diverted more than 10,700 tons of waste from landfills, including more than 9,800 tons of construction and demolition materials. Genzyme’s 2010 waste reduction efforts resulted in greenhouse gas emission reductions of nearly 3,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. Genzyme also saved nearly $153,000 by purchasing construction materials through its Construction Waste Management Plan (CWMP).
Genzymes comprehensive CWMP outlines the companys plan to help it reduce construction and demolition wastes and maximize the amount of materials reduced, reused, and recycled. The CWMP involves training employees, implementing strategies, and introducing certification requirements. The plan is also an important component of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) program, which is intended to reduce the environmental, energy, and cost impacts of building construction.
DOE Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) Gold Achievement Electronics Reduction
The 2011 WasteWise Gold Achievement Award in the category of Electronics Reduction is presented to the DOE Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL). PPPLs Environmentally Preferable Purchasing program requires that environmentally preferable products, including ENERGY STAR® qualified and EPEAT items, are purchased whenever possible.
In 2010, PPPL reused or recycled more than 12 tons of electronics, including desktop and laptop computers, copiers, and printers. At PPPL, 35 percent of electronics are reused on site, sold to the general public, or donated, and the facility sends 65 percent to UNICOR to be recycled. In addition, PPPL recycled more than 32 tons of outdated magnetic tapes and more than 45 tons of non-PCB capacitors. Through its efforts to divert electronics and other materials, PPPL prevented more than 1,200 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2010.
MGM Resorts International Gold Achievement Award Food Recovery
MGM Resorts International is the 2011 WasteWise Gold Achievement award winner for Food Recovery. As one of the worlds leading global hospitality companies, MGM Resorts has strived to become more sustainable by acting on its philosophy of Conserve Today, Protect Tomorrow. MGMs executive chefs, food and beverage departments, and green teams have come together to greatly improve the companys food waste management. All MGM resorts employ and train a 24-hour recycling staff and mandate food waste separation in most restaurants, buffets, and employee dining rooms. Different color bins are used in the restaurants to help designate food waste, mixed recyclables, and garbage. Additionally, MGM has partnered with waste management businesses and local farms to donate food scraps for composting and animal feeding. As a result of these efforts, MGMs CityCenter and Mandalay Bay resorts in Las Vegas each composted more than 2,000 tons of organics, and collectively, MGMs resorts composted more than 10,000 tons in 2010.
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. Gold Achievement Award Organic Materials Reduction
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. is the recipient of the 2011 WasteWise Gold Achievement Award in Organics Materials Reduction. Sierra Nevada has been operating on a foundation of resource conservation and waste reduction since its establishment in 1980. In 2010, the company purchased the countrys first HotRot Composting System, an onsite system that can compost up to 2.5 tons of organic material daily. Since purchasing the HotRot System, Sierra Nevada has composted more than 120 tons of organic material, including spent hops and grain from the brewing process; pre and postconsumer food waste from an onsite restaurant, the concert venue, and all employee break rooms; and paper towel waste. As an additional bonus, the company no longer has to work with an offsite vendor to haul and compost its organic wastes. With the purchase of the HotRot system, Sierra Nevada can compost all its organic waste on site and use the finished product on its 8-acre plot of organic hops and its 2-acre garden for the restaurant, saving more than $15,000 on offsite composting costs.
In 2010, Sierra Nevada implemented various changes to help increase the amount of food waste diverted from landfills. It replaced individual creamers in plastic containers with bulk creamer dispensed into reusable serving cups, eliminated the use of individual butter pats, and switched to straws and kids cups made from compostable plastic. In addition, the company began using 100 percent recycled-content paper towels throughout the brewery.
Krueger International, Inc. Gold Achievement Packaging Reduction
Through its conscious efforts to incorporate sustainable practices and policies into its manufacturing, previous WasteWise award winner Krueger International, Inc. (KI) has earned the 2011 Gold Achievement Award for Packaging Reduction. KI succeeded in 2010 by committing to its packaging goals, which include reducing packaging materials; increasing recycled content in packaging materials and reducing the use of virgin materials; and ensuring that all materials can be easily recycled post-shipment. By carrying out its packaging goals, KI recycled more than 3,000 tons of materials and prevented over 1,000 tons of waste from landfills in 2010. The majority of KIs packaging materials include wood, ferrous metals, and cardboard.
Additionally, KI promotes WasteWise to its employees and community by conducting environmental awareness trainings, compliance auditing, and tradeshows. KI trains employees to not only reduce the use of packaging materials, but also eliminate solvent-based materials, incorporate recycled content when manufacturing, and conserve fuel and energy. KIs waste reduction activities in 2010 not only saved more than $2.8 million for the company but resulted in greenhouse gas emission reductions of more than 13,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.
Damascus Elementary School Gold Achievement Award Paper Reduction
The recipient of the 2011 WasteWise Gold Achievement Award for Paper Reduction is Damascus Elementary School. Students and teachers are actively involved in recycling and reducing waste. In 2010, Damascus Elementary School recycled nearly 130,000 pounds of paper, cardboard, newspapers, and magazines. In addition to a strong recycling program, Damascus Elementary School strives to do everything it can to reduce the amount of paper it uses. Teachers encourage students to use both sides of paper for assignments; are replacing paper handouts with dry erase boards; and record grades, assign homework, and correspond with parents electronically.
Damascus Elementary School also reuses shredded paper by sending it to local farmers for use as animal bedding, using it as an alternative to packing peanuts, and using in the schools compost bin. They also reuse books, donating more than 200 pounds of text books in 2010 to nearby school districts. The school also won the 2010 Mahoning County/AT&T Phone Book Recycling Challenge, collecting more than 3,200 pounds of phone books.
University of Rochester Gold Achievement Public Education and Outreach
The University of Rochester (UR) is the recipient of the 2011 WasteWise Gold Achievement Award for Public Education and Outreach. Throughout 2010, UR made an enormous effort to promote waste reduction practices and was actively involved in several recycling initiatives. The university effectively utilized online social networking tools, posters, fact sheets, articles, student group initiatives, and university staff and faculty to encourage participation in events and campaigns, including RecycleMania, the Go Green Pledge, Earth Day, Water Week, and E-Cycle Day. Through these efforts, more than 5,000 UR undergraduates learned about the importance of waste reduction on their college campus. To keep the students involved in URs sustainability initiatives, they are offered the opportunity to write and edit for the UR Green News newsletter.
In all, URs education and outreach efforts helped the university recycle nearly 3,400 tons of materials, resulting in a reduction of more than 8,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. The university also saved more than $230,000 in 2010 through recycling revenues and avoiding disposal costs.
Allstate Arena Gold Achievement Public Venue Waste Reduction
The 2011 WasteWise Gold Achievement Award in the category of Public Venue Waste Reduction is presented to Allstate Arena. Allstate Arena is one of the largest indoor entertainment facilities in the Chicago area, with 1.2 million visitors each year. Allstate Arena implemented a comprehensive recycling program in 2010 and has made great strides in reducing its wastes. Marked recycling bins are provided for fans to recycle their plastic cups and bottles, and the cleaning contractor separates these items from the waste left in seats after events.
In addition, Allstate Arena is working to reduce the use of disposable items by offering souvenir cups that fans can take home and reuse. In 2010, Allstate Arena sold more than 88,000 reusable cups, which diverted more than one ton of plastic from the landfill. The Arenas Green for a Reason initiative encourages fans to recycle by displaying high-visibility posters and having concession workers and ushers wear buttons with the initiatives message. Concession workers also remind fans purchasing anything in a plastic cup or bottle to recycle it. As a result of Allstate Arenas efforts, the facility was able to recycle more than 70 tons of materials in 2010, resulting in greenhouse gas emission reductions of more than 260 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.
Steelcase Inc. Gold Achievement Award Sustainable Materials Management
The 2011 WasteWise Gold Achievement Award for Sustainable Materials Management has been presented to Steelcase Inc. Steelcase showcased its efforts throughout 2010 by partnering with its clients to reduce the carbon footprint of certain facilities. For example, through its partnership with Cradle-to-Work, Steelcase has been able to recertify more than 50 products to meet sustainable standards. In addition, Steelcase has utilized an energy purchase strategy that is committed to renewable technologies that do not produce greenhouse gases. Steelcase also follows a wood purchasing policy that gives preference to forests independently certified as being sustainable. Along with purchasing sustainable wood materials, the vast majority of Steelcases materials, including particleboard, laminate, steel, and fabrics, are environmentally preferable.
In 2010, Steelcase recycled more than 12,000 tons of materials, including wood and ferrous metals. Its recycling efforts prevented greenhouse gas emissions of more than 24,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent and saved over $6.6 million. In addition, Steelcase is dedicated in spreading the WasteWise message through workshops, blogs, and meetings.
Sandia National LaboratoriesNew Mexico Gold Achievement Sustainable Procurement
The 2011 WasteWise Gold Achievement Award in the category of Sustainable Procurement is presented to Sandia National LaboratoriesNew Mexico (SNL). The Sustainable Acquisition program at SNL aims to integrate products with reduced environmental impact into purchase agreements and ongoing operations and maintenance, focusing on products with high recycled content and renewable biobased materials.
In 2010, SNL purchased recycled-content products for 43 percent of its purchases (by dollar), including cardboard, toner cartridges, and paper. SNL has also extended its sustainable procurement initiative to electronics, requiring that electronics meet the EPEAT Silver-level guidelines, including product features such as containing postconsumer recycled plastic, containing at least 65 percent reusable/recyclable material, and being ENERGY STAR qualified. SNL also requires construction contractors to meet the Engineering and Architectural Standards, including EPAs Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines for products and materials. The facility also reuses concrete and asphalt debris by crushing it into conphalt (a 60/40 blend of crushed concrete and asphalt) and using the material to resurface several onsite access roads.
University of Kansas Hospital Gold Achievement Waste Reduction in the Workplace
With dedication and hard work from the employees on the Green Team Committee, the University of Kansas Hospital has made great strides to receive the 2011 WasteWise Gold Achievement Award for Waste Reduction in the Workplace. Since joining WasteWise in 2009, the Green Team has quickly committed to fulfilling the hospitals commitments to the community and environment through recycling, waste reduction, environmentally preferable purchasing, education, and community involvement. At every new employee orientation, the Green Team educates and trains fellow coworkers about sustainability and recycling in the workplace.
Through its 2010 waste reduction efforts, the hospitals Green Team was able to prevent and recycle more than 135 tons of waste, resulting in greenhouse gas emission reductions of more than 360 metric tons of carbon equivalent. The hospital has also saved more than $177,000 as a result of its recycling initiatives.
Limited Brands, Inc. Honorable Mention Very Large Business Partner of the Year
Limited Brands, Inc. is the 2011 WasteWise Honorable Mention for Very Large Business Partner of the Year. Limited Brands achieved a waste diversion rate of 89 percent in 2010, representing more than a 3-percent increase compared to 2009. The company sends its excess fragrance oil to a vendor in Ohio, diverting more than 54 tons of this material in 2010. Limited Brands also recycled approximately 285 tons of stretch wrap in 2010. During its annual Earth Week event, Limited Brands focused on educating employees about environmental initiatives and collected more than 160 cell phones for recycling and more than 150 pairs of eyeglasses and 2,500 pounds of clothing and household items for reuse. Its waste reduction activities in 2010 helped Limited Brand add more than $1.3 million to its bottom line in revenue and avoid $2 million in disposal costs.
The company also uses its annual associate sale event to reuse or donate excess and discontinued products. At the end of the sale, any unsold items are available to local nonprofits, and proceeds from the sale are donated to the United Way of Central Ohio. In 2010, more than 90 nonprofit partners participated, and Limited Brands donated $301,000 to the United Way. Limited Brands diverted more than 3,500 tons of material through the associate sale program in 2010, a 26-percent increase compared to 2009.
Sears Holdings Corporation Honorable Mention Very Large Business Partner of the Year
Sears Holdings Corporation (SHC) is the recipient of the 2011 WasteWise Honorable Mention for Very Large Business Partner of the Year. As a national retailer with thousands of stores, SHC truly understands and tries to improve the environmental impact of its business operations. To help accomplish this, SHC developed a comprehensive sustainability program, and the company effectively recycled a variety of materials, including plastics, cardboard, batteries, tires, and appliances. In 2010, SHC diverted more than 410,000 tons of waste from the landfill. SHCs waste reduction efforts in 2010 resulted in greenhouse gas emission reductions of over 1.1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, which is equal to taking more than 200,000 passenger cars off the road for a year.
After SHC became a WasteWise partner in April 2010, it immediately started emphasizing the importance of the program to all staff members to help implement its WasteWise partnership effectively and engage employees. SHC sent out a press release announcing its partnership and hosted a Lunch N Learn event at its corporate headquarters. In addition, SHC participated in several other events throughout 2010, including America Recycles Day and Call2Recyle.
University of Washington Honorable Mention College/University Partner of the Year
The University of Washington (UW) received the 2011 WasteWise Honorable Mention for College/University Partner of the Year. In 2010, UW achieved a 57 percent waste diversion rate, diverting more than 6,900 tons of waste from the landfill. UWs waste reduction activities in 2010 resulted in greenhouse gas emission reductions of more than 11,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. In addition, UW avoided more than $900,000 in disposal costs. In 2010, the student environmental group, UW Earth Club, launched a campaign to reduce paper use on campus. Working in collaboration with UW Building Services, the group placed These Come from Trees stickers on more than 2,600 paper towel dispensers on campus. The university also maintains a reuse program for polystyrene and other types of packing materials, collecting and storing the material for pickup by local companies and nonprofits.
UWs composting program made great strides in 2010, collecting more than 900 tons of food waste, nearly a 20-percent increase from 2009. Composting is available at Husky Stadium during home football games, and the UW Medical Centers Plaza Café began collecting food waste in 2010. UW also participated in the WasteWise Game Day Challenge and accomplished a 53-percent waste diversion rate, ranking seventh out of 75 competing schools.
San Diego Padres Honorable Mention Food Recovery
The San Diego Padres have been recognized as WasteWises 2011 Honorable Mention in the category of Food Recovery. The team plays at PETCO Park, and its employees have made a focused effort to reduce food waste during and after every home game. Its Food Waste Diversion Program started in 2005 and continues to be successful. Compost bins with labels and directions have been placed throughout the ballpark so that attendees can easily throw away excess food. PETCO Park employees sort the bins carefully after every home game and place the scraps into a food waste compactor for composting. Once the composting process is complete, some of the compost is brought back to the ballpark and used for exterior landscaping. Additionally in 2010, PETCO Park employees cut down on food preparations to reduce the amount of leftovers accumulated after each home game. Through its composting program, the Padres composted 132 tons of food waste, while over 3 tons of consumable food was donated to the San Diego Rescue Mission, a local homeless shelter.
SUPERVALU, Inc. Honorable Mention Food Recovery
SUPERVALU, Inc. received the 2011 WasteWise Honorable Mention for Food Recovery. SUPERVALU, a grocery retail and pharmacy company that includes stores like Albertsons, Shoppers, Jewel-Osco, and Shaws, made waste reduction and recycling a priority in 2010. To help achieve its waste reduction goals, SUPERVALU added a new full-time position dedicated to implementing a successful waste diversion program for the company.
In 2010, SUPERVALU worked with Feeding America to donate edible, but unsellable, food to food banks, diverting more than 30,000 tons of food from the landfill and avoiding more than $2.5 million in landfill costs. In addition, SUPERVALU announced in 2010 that two stores achieved zero waste, a significant step in helping the company realize its waste reduction goals.
Solar Innovations, Inc. Honorable Mention Packaging Reduction
Through its dedication to creating the most efficient packaging with the least amount of environmental impact, WasteWisehas awarded the 2011 Honorable Mention for Packaging Reduction to Solar Innovations, Inc. While working in its field sites, Solar Innovations makes every effort to return crating, shipping, and packaging materials (such as cardboard, plastics, and paper) to reuse and recycle at its main manufacturing facility. For materials such as polystyrene, which can be a little more difficult to reuse and recycle, Solar Innovations ensures that this material is sent to a cup manufacturer for recycling.
In 2010, Solar Innovations recycled more than 136 tons of materials, resulting in greenhouse gas emission reductions of more than 619 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. The company distributes an internal newsletter to employees to help communicate its WasteWise partnership, provide outreach about its packaging reduction efforts, and share Green Tips that employees can use in the workplace or at home.
