NPEP Success Story: Epson Portland
Epson Portland, Inc. Takes Mercury Challenge
Epson Portland Inc. (EPI), the sole U.S.-based ink and ink cartridge manufacturing affiliate of Japan's Seiko Epson Corporation.
Epson's NPEP Goal
Epson made a commitment to the NPEP program in May of 2008 to participate in its "Mercury Challenge." The scope of that commitment was to remove all mercury from the plant by the end of September 2008.
Waste Minimization Results
After auditing for mercury-containing items, it was discovered that EPI had six thermostats--three for heating, two for cooling and one for both--that utilized the metal. By the end of August, a full month earlier than planned, all mercury-containing thermostats had been removed and were replaced with electronic versions. The total amount of mercury removed from the plant was 0.945 pounds.
