Environmental Business Practice Indicators (EBPIs)

Note: EPA no longer updates this information, but it may be useful as a reference or resource.

ERP's key measures are called Environmental Business Practice Indicators (EBPIs). States typically use EBPIs to demonstrate facility performance in terms of both compliance and voluntary best management practices. EBPIs help regulators concentrate on the highest-priority concerns in a sector by summarizing performance data on a subset of checklist questions. Most ERP states choose between 10 and 30 EBPIs, depending on the sector and the state's needs. States typically choose EBPIs that track facility and sector behavior across all relevant environmental media categories covered by that particular ERP (e.g., air, water, waste). To learn more about EBPIs and to review some examples, please read Section 2.7 of EPA's 2007 report on ERP results (PDF)(40 pp, 1179K, About PDF).
