in mass spectrometric based technologies used in environmental,
pharmaceutical and biomedical analyses, including capillary
electrophoresis, nanoscale liquid chromatography, and gas
chromatography.

Automated and applied Ion Composition Elucidation (ICE), a high resolution mass spectrometric technique composed of Mass Peak Profiling from Selected-Ion-Recording (MPPSIRD) for data acquisition and a Profile Generation Model (PGM) to determine the unique composition for each ion in a mass spectrum based on the acquired data, to identify dozens of compounds in a drinking water reservoir and in sewage treatment plant effluents.
Developed a methodology to determine elemental compositions of ions
using high resolution mass spectrometry without mass calibrants. Samples
were infused with electrospray ionization; data was acquired using Mass
Peak Profiling from Selected Ion Recording Data (MPPSIRD).

- Wrote software to perform MPPSIRD with a Finnigan MAT 900-Trap hybrid mass spectrometer using gas or liquid sample introduction with EI, ESI, or APCI. MPPSIRD provides a 100-fold increase in sensitivity and a 6-fold faster cycle time over full scanning at a mass resolution of 20,000.
- Determined the elemental compositions of molecular and fragment ions for well pollutants using MPPSIRD leading to their identification.
- Used MPPSIRD to provide elemental compositions of molecular and fragment ions from synthetic products and impurities to confirm product identities or to provide guidance for synthesis modification.
- Optimized an optical bench configuration for capillary electrophoresis with laser induced fluorescence detection.
- Developed a method to identify and quantify Aroclors using MPPSIRD and sampling with a probe or a short, deactivated capillary column.
- Packed capillary electrokinetic chromatography (CEC) columns and performed CEC experiments on a Beckman PACE 2000 CE instrument.
- Designed and built a pressure-assisted CEC interface for Finnigan ESI and APCI ion sources.
PRINCIPAL SCIENTIST: Lockheed Environmental Systems & Technologies; 1988-February, 1996
- As Task Lead, managed, planned, performed and interpreted experiments necessary to develop analytical methods using high resolution mass spectrometry.
- Designed experiments and operated a VG70-250SE high resolution mass spectrometer for 7 years.
- Identified and quantified target compounds at ultra-trace levels in environmental samples.
- Familiar with EPA Methods 1613, 8290 and 8280; electron ionization; negative chemical ionization; fast atom bombardment; liquid secondary ionization mass spectrometry.
- Packed, interfaced and evaluated nanoscale (75 m i.d.) liquid chromatography columns. Designed and built a sample introduction probe to support and protect fragile capillaries. Determined exact masses of dyes and herbicides using LC/LSIMS - HRMS.
- Wrote and documented an integrated software package for instrument control, data reduction, quality assurance, and report generation by interfacing commercial software with a mass spectrometer data system for EPA Method 8280.
- Created, automated and applied a new high resolution mass spectrometric technique, Mass Peak Profiling from Selected-Ion -Recording Data (MPPSIRD), to determine exact masses and elemental compositions for trace components in complex samples.
- Created computer models in QuickBasic to provide quantities needed for identifying compounds using the new technique.
- Developed a high resolution, GC/MS, congener-specific method for identification and quantification of Aroclors.
- Identified molecular or other large ions for 47 chromatographic peaks for a complex environmental sample using MPPSIRD.
RESEARCH ASSISTANT: Oregon Graduate Institute, Beaverton, OR
- Designed, built, and characterized an atmospheric pressure ionization (API) source for a VG 7070E high resolution mass spectrometer.
- Used the API source to acquire medium resolution APIMS data to identify several photo-oxidation products of toluene.
RESEARCH ASSISTANT: Analytical Chemistry Department, Univ. of Wisconsin, Madison, WI
- Redesigned and built all but the vacuum chamber of a triple-cathode plate, photo-ionization chamber to enhance durability and provide flexibility in plate configuration. Derived equations to explain the optimum plate configuration determined experimentally.
- Used the instrument to determine photo-absorption cross sections for several gases in the vacuum UV wavelength region using a synchrotron light source.
