Arkansas fatmucket [Lampsillis powelli]

The Arkansas fatmucket is a medium sized freshwater mussel approximately 3.9 inches in length. Its shell is shiny olive-brown with a pearly, bluish-white interior. This species is found in deep pools or backwater areas with sand or gravel bottoms and a fast current to prevent silt or detritus buildup. The fatmucket, like other mussels, feeds by filtering food particles from the water.

The historic range of the Arkansas fatmucket mussel was believed to have been widespread in Arkansas in the Caddo River, the Ouchita River, and the Saline River. However, it is now only found in select locations and in limited numbers in these three rivers. The decline of the Arkansas fatmucket has been attibuted to construction of dams, alteration of channels, gravel dredging, and decline in water quality from agriculture and industrial runofffs.
