Rapid Detection of Microbial Contamination of
 Water: Application of Molecular Technologies
 to Source and Potable Water Monitoring

Microbial pathogens continue to contaminate drinking water supplies and cause waterborne disease outbreaks, despite current regulations designed to prevent and control the spread of microbial pathogens in public and individual water systems. EPA currently regulates two indicators of microbiological drinking water quality: total coliform and turbidity. These two indicators may not be enough to detect all types of microbial contamination because of the great diversity of microbial pathogens.

This Action Team works to develop molecular detection technologies for monitoring water, compare molecular detection technologies to existing methods, and facilitate acceptance of molecular methods.
