EPA Science Forum 2008

EPA will host Science Forum 2008 on May 20–22, at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. The theme of this year’s forum is “Innovative Technologies: Key to Environmental and Economic Progress.” The event will feature a plenary session and four thematic session tracks: Technology Advances and Future Directions; Energy, Climate, and the Environment; Water Systems Infrastructure and Security; and Facilitating Technology Development and Commercialization through Partnerships. Besides presentations from technology experts both within and outside of EPA, the forum will also include an Environmental Technology Expo to highlight innovative technologies such as pollutant monitoring units; treatment systems for air, water, and soil; environmental databases, decision support tools and modeling systems; and mobile monitoring and remediation units. Representatives from ETV centers and collaborators will present in all forum tracks. Exhibits featuring ETV verification efforts and various ETV-verified products will be on display in the expo. Mark your calendars for this premier EPA event!

ETV Participates in First Meeting of the New EPA Regional Environmental Technology Advocates Network

In 2007, EPA established a Regional Environmental Technology Advocates Network (RETAN) that includes technology advocates from each of the ten EPA Regions. RETAN is charged with identifying opportunities to use technology in order to achieve better results, sharing information within EPA and among its stakeholders, and serving as liaisons with technology programs across EPA and members of the EPA Environmental Technology Council. The newly formed RETAN initially met on April 1–3, at the EPA Region 5 office in Chicago, Illinois. Two main objectives of the meeting, led by EPA interim Senior Environmental Technology Officer Jeff Heimerman, were to prioritize environmental problems with technology needs for each region and to discuss existing and potential tools, technology programs, and partnerships that could help RETAN fulfill its mission. Some examples of regional environmental problems identified at the meeting include storm water and nonpoint source nutrient loading; indoor air concerns (for example, radon, vapor intrusion); mercury emissions monitoring from coal-fired power plants; biofuels impacts, production, and distribution; and mining-related issues (for example, acid mine drainage). Abby Waits and Doug Grosse represented ETV and participated in the RETAN meeting. ETV is identifying opportunities to provide targeted information on technology verification as a tool to aid RETAN.
