Mercury Emission Monitors VerifiedThe ETV Advanced Monitoring Systems Center, operated in cooperation with Battelle, has verified the performance of four mercury emission monitors for determining mercury in stack gas at a coal-fired power plant. In collaboration with the Illinois Clean Coal Institute, and with assistance from the Northern Indiana Public Service Company, ETV verified the following four monitors: Sorbent-Based Mercury Sampling System, developed by Apex Instruments, Inc.; HG-324K System, developed by Environmental Supply Company; Series 3300 Mercury Continuous Emissions Monitoring System, developed by Tekran Instruments Corporation; and Thermo Electron Mercury Freedom System, developed by Thermo Electron Corporation. The monitors were evaluated in terms of relative accuracy, linearity, seven-day calibration error, cycle time, data completeness, and operational factors (ease of use, maintenance and data output needs, power and other consumables use, reliability, and operation costs). Under the Clean Air Mercury Rule issued by EPA in 2005, most power plants are required to monitor their mercury emissions using such system beginning January 1, 2009. Verification results for these monitors can aid in identifying systems that may play an important role in reducing mercury emissions and providing environmental and human health benefits. Verification reports and statements for these systems will be available soon on the ETV Web site. Mobile Sources Device VerifiedThe ETV Air Pollution Control Technology Center, in cooperation with RTI International, has verified the performance of the PMF GreenTec 1004205.00.0 system, developed by PUREM North America, LLC. This emissions control system consists of a precious metal diesel oxidation catalyst and diesel particulate filter for highway diesel engines. The performance verified was the percentage emission reduction achieved by the technology for particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide, relative to the performance of the same baseline engine without the technology in place. Operating conditions were documented and ancillary performance measurements were also made. The verification report and statement are available on the ETV Web site.
