Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Program

ETV Begins Third Round of Testing for Mercury Monitoring Systems

The ETV Advanced Monitoring Systems (AMS) Center, operated in cooperation with Battelle, is conducting a third round of verification testing for mercury monitoring systems designed to challenge flue gas matrix at a coal-fired power plant. The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection and the Illinois Clean Coal Institute are partnering with ETV on this verification. Testing began on June 12, 2006, and is being conducted at the Schahfer coal-fired power plant in Valparaiso, IN. Two types of technologies are being verified: continuous emission monitors (CEMs) and sorbent-based sampling systems. The Clean Air Mercury Rule established the sorbent-based mercury measurement technologies as being equally acceptable for mercury monitoring as true CEMs. The sorbent-based devices use activated carbon traps and can sample over time periods ranging from hours to days. Four mercury monitoring systems, two CEMs and two sorbent-based sampling technologies, are participating in this third round verification. Testing procedures will target PS-12A performance requirements and Ontario Hydro will be the reference method used. The AMS Center verified four mercury monitoring technologies in August 2001, and an additional five technologies in September 2003. For more information, please visit the ETV Web site.

Mobile Mass Spectrometer Verified

The ETV Advanced Monitoring Systems Center, in cooperation with Battelle, has verified the performance of the CT-1128 Portable Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS) developed by Constellation Technology Corporation. This mobile mass spectrometer was verified for its ability to identify and quantify target contaminants in various water matrices. The CT-1128 was evaluated for the following performance parameters: accuracy, precision, linearity, instrument stability, potential matrix and interference effects, sensitivity, field portability and operational factors. Three classes of contaminants were used for testing: volatile organic compounds (benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and total xylenes), pesticides (2,4-D and dicrotophus), and chemical warfare agents (VX, GB and GD). The verification report and statement will be available soon on the ETV Web site.
