ETV Attends International Verification Working
Group Meeting in Montreal, Canada

On June 21-22, 2007, representatives from the U.S. EPA ETV Program attended the 1st Meeting of the International Working Group on Environmental Performance Verification, hosted by Environment Canada in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. This ad hoc international working group is comprised of representatives for on-going or pilot verification programs in the U.S. EPA, European Commission, and Environment Canada. The main objectives of the two-day meeting were to discuss opportunities for developing a common approach to verification and identify technology areas of mutual interest for joint or co-verification. Teresa Harten, Evelyn Hartzell, and Lora Johnson from the U.S. EPA represented the ETV Program on the working group. In 2005 and 2006, the U.S. EPA and Environment Canada hosted the 1st and 2nd Environmental Technology Verification International Forums, respectively. The 3rd ETV International Forum is scheduled for November 2007, in association with Pollutec Horizons 2007, an international conference and exhibition held bi-annually in Paris, France.

EPA Federal Advosiry Committee Evaluates
Agency's Role in Technology Facilitation

In May 2007, the National Advisory Council for Environmental Policy and Technology's (NACEPT's) Environmental Technology Subcommittee issued the second of two reports on the role of the U.S. EPA in fostering the development and deployment of innovative environmental technologies. The first report, published in May 2006, focused on the internal structure, efficacy, and communication of EPA's technology programs. The second report, “EPA Technology Programs: Engaging the Marketplace,” focuses on EPA's relationships, interactions, and communication with the greater environmental technology marketplace. NACEPT is a federal advisory committee which provides independent advice to the EPA Administrator on environmental policy, technology, and management issues. The reports are the response of the NACEPT Environmental Technology Subcommittee to EPA's charge to evaluate and make recommendations on EPA facilitation and use of innovative environmental technology. Both reports include recommendations for the optimization and strengthening of environmental technology programs, such as the ETV Program. Technology verification, in particular, is called out as an important area which should be expanded. To view the NACEPT Subcommittee reports, visit the EPA Internet at http://www.epa.gov/ocem/nacept/reports/index.html.
