Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Program
Texas NTRD Funding Announcement
The Texas Environmental Research Consortium, which oversees the New Technology Research and Development (NTRD) program, announces a Request for Grant Applications (RFGA) to develop and verify innovative solutions to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from diesel engines. It is anticipated that $4.7 million will be awarded for 10 to 20 projects ranging from $100,000 to $750,000. The focus of the RFGA is to develop NOx reduction solutions for diesel engines with duty cycles resulting in low exhaust gas temperatures. For more information on the RFGA, please visit the website .

ETV Director to Participate in European Seminar on Technology Verification Testnet
In cooperation with the Finnish Ministry of the Environment and VTT, will host an international seminar, Testing and Verification of Environmental Technologies Challenges and Opportunities, on October 3, in Dipoli, ESPOO, Finland. The European Union has established an Environmental Technologies Action Plan (ETAP) to bridge the gap between technology innovation and application. The goals of the upcoming seminar are to discuss European and international technology verification activities and opportunities to harmonize verification protocols, and to provide Finnish and international stakeholders with a coherent picture of environmental technology testing and its aims and possibilities, as well as the current state of affairs in this field. Teresa Harten, ETV Director, will participate in this international seminar and will present on the “U.S. EPA ETV Program (Objectives and Impacts) and Possibilities to Harmonize National ETV Systems.” For more information, please visit http://www.est-testnet.net/ .

Rapid Toxicity Testing Systems Verified
The ETV Advanced Monitoring Systems Center, in cooperation with Battelle, has completed a second round of verifications for rapid toxicity testing systems for detecting various toxic contaminants in water. Eight rapid toxicity testing systems were verified in a first round of verifications in November 2003. An additional seven systems have been verified in this second round of testing. They are: AbraTox Kit developed by Abraxis; Chem-IQ Tox developed by Aqua Survey, Inc.; ToxScreen-II developed by CheckLight Ltd.; Toxi-Chromotest developed by Environmental Bio-Detection Products, Inc.; LuminoTox PECs and LuminoTox SAPS, both developed by Lab_Bell Inc.; and RAPIDTOXKIT developed by Strategic Diagnostics Inc. In verification testing, the systems were subjected to various concentrations of contaminants such as industrial chemicals, pesticides, rodenticides, pharmaceuticals, nerve agents, and biological toxins. The following parameters were evaluated: endpoints and precision, toxicity threshold for each contaminant, false positive and false negative responses, and other performance factors (sample throughput, ease of use, reliability). The verification reports and statements for these systems are available on the ETV Web site.

Reverse Osmosis Based Point-of-Use Device Verified
The ETV Drinking Water Systems Center, in cooperation with National Sanitation Foundation International (NSF International), has verified the performance of a reverse osmosis based point-of-use treatment system for removal of microbial contaminants in drinking water. The system, the WP-4V developed by Watts Premier, was tested for removal of bacteria and viruses. The system was challenged with the bacteriophage viruses fr and MS2 and the bacteria Brevundimonas diminuta. Bacteria and virus log10 reduction data were collected and evaluated. The verification report and statement will be available on the ETV Web site.
