Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Program
ETV to Participate in International Environmental Technology Verification Forums
In November, ETV Program Director Teresa Harten and ETV team members Lora Johnson and Evelyn Hartzell will participate in a series of international events related to technology performance verification in Paris, France. These events are being held in conjunction with Pollutec Horizons 2007, an international exhibition of environmental equipment, technology, and services for decision-makers in the environmental marketplace. More than 40,000 attendees are expected. The ETV Program will exhibit. On November 26-27, the European Commission (EC) will host the Third European Forum on Eco-Innovation: Boosting Eco-Technologies through Verification. This Forum will focus on the role of Environmental Performance Verification (EPV) in support of the European Union (EU) Environmental Technologies Action Plan, and will provide opportunities to learn more about existing systems, discuss the current state of EU preparation in this field, and debate on the main features of the EU scheme under construction.
International aspects of EPV will be further discussed at the Third International Forum on Systems for Environmental Performance Verification: Engaging the Developing World, which will be held on November 28. This is the third in a series of ETV international forums, the first of which was hosted by the U.S. EPA ETV Program in July 2005, in Washington, DC.
Finally, on November 30, the three ETV representatives will participate in the Second Meeting of the International Working Group on Environmental Performance Verification. Group members from the U.S., Canada, and the EC will meet to investigate the development of comparable processes and programs, with the ultimate goal of a common approach to verification in the future.

Point-of-Entry Drinking Water Treatment System Verified
The ETV Drinking Water Systems Center, operated by NSF International, has verified the performance of RASco, Inc.’s Advanced Simultaneous Oxidation Process (ASOP) drinking water treatment module for removal of synthetic organic chemical contaminants. The system was tested for the reduction of the following chemicals: aldicarb, benzene, carbofuran, chloroform, dichlorvos, dicrotophos, methomyl, mevinphos, nicotine, oxamyl, paraquat, phorate, sodium fluoroacetate, and strychnine. Separate challenges were conducted for each chemical. The target chemical challenge concentration was 1,000 micrograms per liter. The verification report and statement will be available soon on the ETV Web site.

Baghouse Filtration Product Verified
The ETV Air Pollution Control Technology Center, operated by RTI International, has verified the performance of Donaldson Company, Inc.’s Tetratec #6255 Filtration Media for controlling fine particulate matter (PM2.5) emissions. The fabric filter was evaluated for the following parameters: outlet particle concentration at standard conditions (for PM2.5 and total mass), average and initial residual pressure drop, residual pressure drop increase, filtration cycle time, mass gain of test sample filter, and number of cleaning cycles. The report and statement will be available soon on the ETV Web site.

Personal Cascade Impactor Sampler Verified
The ETV Advanced Monitoring Systems Center, operated by Battelle, has verified the performance of SKC, Inc.’s Sioutas Personal Cascade Impactor Sampler (PCIS) with Leland Legacy Pump. The verification test provided quantitative and qualitative performance data under a range of typical and extreme operating conditions. The performance of the PCIS was evaluated during a short-term (10-15 minutes) sampling of test aerosol generated in a large chamber and a long-term (48 hours) sampling of ambient air particulate. During the tests, chemical and gravimetric comparisons were made of the PCIS’s sampling efficiency to three, more well-known personal and fixed-site air samplers that were collocated with the PCIS. A human subjects study was also conducted to evaluate more subjective parameters, such as ease of use, reliability, and subject acceptance. The verification report and statement will be available soon on the ETV Web site.
