Immunoassay Test Kits for Biotoxins Verified
The ETV Advanced Monitoring Systems Center, in cooperation with Battelle, has verified the performance of a second round of immunoassay test kits designed to detect biotoxins in water. The three test kits are: BioVerify Botulinum Toxin A and Ricin Test Kits and M-SERIES M1M Analyzer (for detecting botulinum toxin A and ricin), developed by BioVeris Corporation; EzyBot A and EzyBot B Test Kits (for detecting botulinum toxin), developed by PharmaLeads; and QTL Biosensor (for detecting anthrax and ricin), developed by QTL Biosystems, LLC. The test kits were evaluated in terms of the following parameters: contaminant presence/absence; false positive/false negative response to interferents, drinking water matrix effects, and cross-reactivity; consistency; lowest detectable concentration; field portability; ease of use; and sample throughput. ETV Protocol to Be Considered for International Testing Standard
The ETV Air Pollution Control Technology (APCT) Center, operated in cooperation with RTI International, verifies the performance of fabric filter media for use in baghouses to control fine particulate matter. ASTM International has adopted the ETV baghouse filtration testing protocol as its standard. The International Standards Organization (ISO), a worldwide voluntary standards organization, has also proposed the ETV protocol as their standard. On October 2, John McKenna of ETS, RTI’s subcontractor for baghouse filter verifications, attended a meeting of the ISO working group at ASTM headquarters in Conshohocken, PA. The focus of this ISO group is the creation of an international standard for the performance testing of cleanable industrial filters.
The meeting included participants representing Austria, China, Germany, Great Britain, Japan and the U.S. At this meeting, it was reaffirmed that a single testing protocol, i.e., one that has previously been adopted by both Germany and the U.S. (under ASTM and ETV), will be the basis for the test method submittal to ISO for adoption. In addition, it was resolved that, while one test protocol has been chosen and described for submission, it is recognized that another protocol may be found acceptable once test results demonstrate consistency with the approved protocol.

ETV Air Pollution Control Technology Center
Solicits Technology Vendors
The APCT Center, operated by RTI International, invites vendors
to participate in verification tests of the following technologies:
Diesel Engine Retrofit Emissions Control Technologies: Retrofit technologies that control emissions of particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, or carbon monoxide from heavy duty diesel engines. Technologies include add on devices such as exhaust catalysts and particulate matter filters, engine modifications, selective catalytic reduction systems, fuel modifications and reformulations, alternative fuels, and lubricants used on mobile diesel engines and some categories of stationary engines. Verification of these technologies, when used to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, is of interest to Texas’ New Technology Research and Development (NTRD) Program, as well as others. Interested vendors should contact Drew Trenholm, RTI, at (919) 316-3742. For more information on the NTRD Program, please contact Richard Haut, Houston Advanced Research Center, at (281) 364-6093.
Fabric Filter Media: Filter media used in baghouses to control fine particulate matter. For more information, please contact Drew Trenholm, RTI, at (919) 316-3742.
Ventilation Air Cleaning or Filtration Technologies: Products for cleaning or filtering ventilation air. Verifications can include ASHRAE 52.2 type efficiency testing for particles from 0.3 to 10 microns, efficiency testing for particles from 0.03 to 10 microns, and efficiency testing for bioaerosols (fungi, bacteria, and virus). For more information, please contact
Debbie Franke, RTI, at (919) 541-6826.
