DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY
[Project No. 184-050 California]

Pacific Gas and Electric Company; Notice of Availability of Environmental Assessment

July 3, 1996.
An environmental assessment (EA) is available for public review. The EA is for an application to divert water (up to 500 acre-feet per year) from Caples Lake for snow making purposes at the Kirkwood Ski Resort. Caples Lake is a project reservoir of the El Dorado Project. The proposal is part of the Kirkwood Water Rights and Snowmaking Project previously reviewed by the U.S. Forest Service, Alpine County, and other federal, state, and local agencies. The EA finds that approval of the application would not constitute a major federal action significantly affecting the human environment. The El Dorado Project is located on the South Fork American River in El Dorado and Alpine Counties, California.
The EA was written by staff in the Office of Hydropower Licensing, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Copies of the EA are available for review at the Commission's Reference and Information Center, Room 2-A, 888 First Street, NE, Washington, D.C. 20426. Copies can also be obtained by calling the project manager, Jon Cofrancesco at (202) 219- 0079.
Lois D. Cashell,
Secretary.
