Earth Day at Sabine Island
EARTH DAY Activities for the Gulf Ecology Division April 21, 2007
Outreach Program
The Gulf Ecology Division (GED), Gulf Breeze, Florida will sponsor a special Earth Day 2007 activity when it hosts a public Open House for the OSV Bold. The Ocean Survey Vessel (OSV) Bold is EPA's new ocean and coastal monitoring ship. It provides EPA with valuable monitoring and assessment information on the health of our nation's coastal waters. The Bold supports EPA's efforts to monitor and assess impacts on ocean and coastal waters from land- and ocean-based human activities and naturally occurring ecological disturbances. The ship will dock at the Pensacola, FL Municipal Pier on April 19, 2007, in preparation for a Gulf of Mexico Hypoxia Survey.
On Saturday, April 21, 2007, volunteer staff from the Gulf Ecology Division
will host a public Open House from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Approximately
12 volunteers each day will take the public on a tour of four (4) designated
stations on the ship: Station 1: Introduction and explain over-the-side
equipment; Station 2: Vessel's main deck (galley, lounges, crew quarters,
hospital, ship office, and chief scientist quarters, other deck equipment);
Station 3: Survey Operations (lab capabilities, estuary life, data acquisition
center); and Station 4: The Bold officer will explain the bridge.
