Cripe, C.R. and P.H. Pritchard. 1992. Site-Specific Aquatic Microcosms as Test Systems for Fate and Effects of Microorganisms. In: Microbial Ecology: Principles, Methods, and Applications. Morris A. Levin, Ramon J. Seidler, and Marvin Rogul, Editors. McGraw-Hill, New York, NY. Pp. 467-493. (ERL,GB 655).

This paper describes use of microcosms as test systems for fate and transport of microorganisms. Microcosms shown to behave ecologically in a manner similar to that observed in the field might be used as a surrogate for field testing. Containment with microcosms far exceeds that possible with outdoor field studies, and cost savings make microcosms ideal for research.
