Great Lakes Monitoring

Fish Indicators
Contaminants in Top Predator Fish

Safety of Fish for Consumption by Wildlife

Safety of Great Lakes Fish for Consumption by Wildlife

Goal: Top predator fish will be safe for consumption by all wildlife.

Status: Goal is not met in any Great Lake.

Trends: Contaminants significantly reduced since peaks in the 1970's and are still decreasing in most cases.

Issues: Contaminated sediments and air deposition keep contaminant levels elevated above safe levels for wildlife.

* Lake St. Clair is not sampled for the Great Lakes Fish Monitoring Program
