Dissolved Oxygen Depletion in Lake Erie

Lake Erie Central Basin D. O. Concentrations: 1985 to 2006

Goal: Oxygen levels high enough (Target Level) to sustain healthy fishery.

Status: Dissolved oxygen concentrations in late summer are still frequently depleted to stressful levels (less than 4 mg/liter).

Trends: Duration of oxygen depletion is shorter than in the mid-1980's.

Issues: Increasing phosphorus levels may hinder further improvements.
