Lake Michigan Mass Balance

About the Project About the Data Summary Results
concept models pollutants sampling planning partners

Sampling Locations & Techniques

To characterize Lake Michigan over 200 locations (stations) were sampled during the course of the project.  Over 25,000 samples were collected for the Lake Michigan Mass Balance during the 1994 and 1995 sampling seasons.  Samples were collected from three "loading media" including tributary rivers, air deposition, and open lake.  The Mass Balance will produce over 500,000 analytical data points.

The sample collection methods used in collecting the samples and the laboratory methods used in analyzing the samples are documented in the Lake Michigan Mass Balance Methods Compendium

The environmental data will feed a suite of mathematical models which will characterize the flow of pollutants through the ecosystem.
