Through a Gulf of Mexico Program grant totalling $26,000, the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program organized a team and facilitated a coastal habitat strategic assessment workshop May 27 and 28, 2004.
The team determined criteria for priority coastal habitat in the Mobile Bay area and developed Geographic Information System (GIS) maps that helped identify priority sites and their values, a site’s historical significance, and preservation and restoration options. Through these efforts, the team expects to provide optimum fish and wildlife habitat by effectively preserving, restoring, and managing these priority sites.
The grant was authorized under the Clean Water Act and supports the Gulf of Mexico Program’s objective to protect, restore, and enhance coastal marine habitat in the Gulf of Mexico.
