Colonial Waterbird Rookery Island Management within the Coastal Bend, GMP Project #MX974049
A partnership project of the Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program and the Gulf of Mexico Program
Project Highlights:
- Coordinate waterbird research and management activities across disciplines and jurisdictional boundaries
- Coordinate and perform frequent bird population surveys
- Host and organize summit meetings on colonial waterbird issues
- Conduct research on species of concern including least terns, black skimmers, snowy and piping plovers
- Implement strategies for nest-site enhancement including decoy placement, construction of roosting platforms and nesting pads
- Increase public awareness of unlawful activities that damage rookeries
- Develop a waterbird management plan for the Coastal Bend
