Photo 1: As part of the New Orleans EMPACT (Environmental Monitoring for Public Access and Community Tracking) project at Lake Salvador, Dr. Gene Meier of the Gulf of Mexico Program, commercial fisherman Gene Adam, and Chris Swarzenski of the U.S. Geological Survey, (pictured left to right) discuss the benefits of obtaining valuable statistical water data before the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers begins diverting water from the Mississippi River into Davis Pond in 2001. The monitor being installed on the Lake Salvador platform was funded in part by a $100,000 grant from the Gulf of Mexico Program through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Research and Development.
