Closeup photograph of a water quality monitor.

Photo 11: Information from the monitor, paid for in part by a $100,000 grant from the Gulf of Mexico Program, will include daily satellite images of the area. Dr. Nan Walker, a research scientist at Louisiana State University's Coastal Studies Institute in Baton Rouge, La., says that the monitor's real-time data will alert scientists to when conditions are right for algal blooms to develop. Then, more intensive field work and satellite imagery analysis can be initiated by both the U.S. Geological Survey and LSU.
