Photo 2: Drew Puffer, the Gulf of Mexico Program project coordinator, and Marnie Winter, director of the Jefferson Parish Environmental and Development Control Department, look on as the monitor is installed. Partners in this EMPACT project hope it will eliminate citizen concerns about the impact of diverting fresh water from the Mississippi River into Davis Pond by providing time-relevant water quality data to the public. The data obtained from the monitor is also expected to help scientists and engineers better manage the water diversion and diminish the likelihood of algal blooms, which can be toxic, contaminate seafood, and irritate breathing.
