Native Plant Garden, North Park Village Nature Center
City of Chicago, Department of Environment
This 2 ½ acre Nature Center gateway garden, located on Chicago’s Northwest side, contains over 90 species of native plants. The garden has wetland, prairie, woodland and savanna areas. The community is involved through botany and plant identification classes as well as garden tours.
Crystal Cove Pond Wetland Restoration
City of Crystal Lake, Illinois
Crystal Lake has restored 9.5 acres of a 25 acre tract. Areas have been seeded for erosion control, and planted with native wetland and prairie vegetation. The wetland restores and cleanses water by removing pollutants through settling, biological uptake and filtration. The restoration provides a buffer between commercial and residential activity and natural lands/waterways.
Central Avenue Wetland
Roselle Public Works
The Roselle Nature Savers have worked on the Central Ave Wetland restoration project for the past 3 years. The 7.5 acre site is being restored into a functional natural area that provides habitat for local flora and fauna. So far, 5 local schools have used the site with their students and 2 local schools have donated money and time to purchase wetland and prairie plants.
St. Charles Park District
St. Charles, Illinois
St. Charles Park District is working on a restoration project at Campton Hills Park Natural Area. Goals for both sites include increasing public awareness about the Fox River environment, strengthening knowledge, understanding and action in preserving habitat, and building a grass roots movement towards using native plant species in local landscapes.
Sugar Grove Detention Basin Prairie
Village of Sugar Grove, Illinois
This Detention Basin Prairie provides a natural bird and insect habitat, improves air and water quality, provides erosion control and functions as a detention basin controlling run-off for village and school grounds. The prairie is a living classroom for elementary students. This is a cooperative project between the Kaneland Elementary School South Campus, a boy scout working towards his eagle scout award, numerous volunteers and the Village of Sugar Grove.
