The report, Selection of Indicators for Great Lakes Basin Ecosystem Health, describes the process of developing a consistent, easily understood suite of indicators that will objectively represent the state of major ecosystem components across the Great Lakes basin. A detailed description for each of the selected indicators is also included. These indicators are intended to provide the basis for assessing the state of the Great Lakes every two years.

The concepts and ideas contained in Selection of Indicators for Great Lakes Basin Ecosystem Health - Draft for Discussion at SOLEC 98 (Version 2) were presented and discussed at SOLEC 98 (October 21-23, 1998). Participants were encouraged to review the SOLEC 98 document prior to the conference, and to provide comments, suggestions, and/or specific information during and following SOLEC 98.

In the months since SOLEC 98, the SOLEC Steering Committee has continued to revise and refine the proposed set of indicators. The many helpful suggestions received at SOLEC and afterwards have been incorporated wherever possible.

Version 3 of Selection of Indicators for Great Lakes Basin Ecosystem Health includes the following revisions:

  • Some indicators have been dropped or combined
  • Some new indicators have been added
  • The indicator descriptions have been revised and clarified
  • A section has been added on the different ways the SOLEC indicators may be sorted and organized
  • A summary is provided of an independent assessment of the indicators against the SOLEC criteria
  • Updates are provided on the indicator selection process and the electronic database.

This version is available to all Great Lakes stakeholders and others interested in this project. Reviews are invited from both technical and policy standpoints to increase an understanding of the project and to begin to generate the means to implement the indicators for presentation at SOLEC 2000.
