EPA's Stormwater Management Results
In This Section
EPA has begun to make significant progress in increasing Agency stormwater management efforts and implementing sustainable stormwater management and low impact development (LID) practices throughout its facilities. This has resulted in decreased runoff, increased green space, a reduction in the amount of potable water used for irrigation, and improved aesthetics.
The Agency continues to pursue sustainable stormwater management and LID opportunities. Learn more about how EPA is achieving its stormwater management goals.
Stormwater Management Progress
EPA has completed stormwater management retrofit projects at several facilities:
-
The Agency’s Federal Triangle Headquarters complex completed a variety of LID demonstration projects, including the installation of bioretention cells, sustainable landscaping, a rainwater collection system feeding into garage cisterns, and other features.
- The Atlantic Ecology Division Laboratory in Narragansett, Rhode Island, installed a green roof and implemented xeriscaping landscape techniques.
The Region 2 Laboratory in Edison, New Jersey, upgraded a major parking lot to evaluate the quality of stormwater runoff the after installation of various types of permeable surfaces, including porous asphalt, porous concrete, and interlocking paver blocks. In addition, a rain garden was installed to quantify the ability of rain gardens to accept, store, and infiltrate stormwater. The facility compiled extensive documentation during construction to support planned long-term research activity. The project was completed in October 2009. Awards
EPA has received the following awards for its LID project at Headquarters:
- GSA Real Property Management award for Ariel Rios South Courtyard
- 2007 Landscape Contractors Association Grand Award for Commercial Landscape Installation for Ariel Rios South Courtyard
In addition, LID and sustainable stormwater management have contributed to several EPA facilities achieving LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
) certification both for existing buildings and new construction: Potomac Yard Headquarters facility in Arlington, Virginia; Annex 2 of the Andrew W. Breidenbach Environmental Research Center in Cincinnati, Ohio; the New England Regional Laboratory in Chelmsford, Massachusetts; the Region 8 office in Denver, Colorado; and the Science and Technology Center in Kansas City, Kansas.
