Agencywide Projected Annual Energy Intensity, FY 1985-2010

Note: EPA no longer updates this information, but it may be useful as a reference or resource.

Green power purchases are netted out

Executive Order (EO) 13123 (which has since been superseded by EO 13423) required industrial and laboratory facilities to reduce energy intensity by 20 percent by FY 2005 and by 25 percent by FY 2010 compared to an FY 1990 baseline. This line graph shows EPA's historical Agencywide energy intensity (Btu per GSF) for reporting laboratories from FY 1985 through FY 2005, and projections through FY 2010, compared to EPA’s FY 2005 and FY 2010 EO 13123 energy reduction goals. To help stimulate the green power market, the U.S. Department of Energy allows agencies to subtract, or “net out,” their purchases of renewable energy from agencywide total energy consumption to meet energy reduction requirements. This chart presents data with (green line) and without (blue line) EPA’s green purchases netted out.

Note: This data is not normalized for heating or cooling degree days. Variations in weather can affect energy performance up to 5 percent annually.
