Unique Environmental Features
Energy Conservation
- The Foley Square Federal Office Building, where Region 2 is housed, was labeled an ENERGY STAR® building in 1999. Average energy use at this building is approximately 71,900 Btu per square foot per year. For more information, visit ENERGY STAR's® Profile of the Foley Square Federal Office Building.
Green Power
- In June 2006, EPA worked with the Defense Energy Support Center
to procure a green power contract with 3 Phases Energy Services
for 110 million kilowatt hours (kWh) in renewable energy certificates (RECs), or “green tags.” With deliveries beginning September 1, 2006, this blanket purchase offsets 100 percent of annual electricity use at the Region 2 Office and several other facilities through FY 2007 by supporting wind power generation in California, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Wyoming. - On April 22, 2003, EPA announced the purchase of green power to offset 100 percent of the electricity consumption at its Region 2 Headquarters office. EPA occupies approximately 35 percent of the Foley Square Building located in lower Manhattan. With deliveries beginning in June 2003, EPA entered into a three-year contractprocured by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) with the Fenner Wind Power Projectfor the purchase of 6.2 million kWh of green power annually in the form of RECs. This contract supported the generation of renewable energy from 20 state-of-the-art, 1.5 megawatt wind turbines in Fenner, New York. The wind farm is the largest wind turbine facility east of the Mississippi.
