Environmental Management Systems

In This Section

An environmental management system (EMS) is a set of processes and practices that enable an organization to reduce its environmental impacts and increase its operating efficiency. EPA is establishing EMSs at its laboratory and office facilities across the nation.

EPA’s EMS Web page offers more information and resources related to EMS for businesses, associations, the public, and state and federal agencies.

FedCenter is the federal government's home for comprehensive environmental stewardship and compliance assistance information. The FedCenter EMS Web page includes information and resources for the development and implementation of processes and practices that can help an organization reduce its environmental impacts and increase its operating efficiency.

Executive Order (EO) 13514 calls for agencies to continue implementation of formal environmental management systems at all appropriate organizational levels and ensure these formal systems are appropriately implemented and maintained to achieve the performance necessary to meet the goals of the order. EO 13423 ensures that environmental management considerations are a fundamental and integral component of federal government policies, operations, planning, and management.
