Green Power Communities

Leading municipalities across the nation are partnering with EPA to become Green Power Communities (GPCs). GPCs are cities, towns, and villages in which the local government, businesses, and residents collectively buy green power in amounts that meet or exceed EPA's Green Power Community purchase requirements.

EPA requires that a community’s local government become a Green Power Partner and then take the lead on a green power campaign. The green power campaign requires coordination between the local government and the local utility, as well as the participation of local businesses, residents, and non-profit organizations. The local government (or utility) must provide data to EPA on the campaign's progress in reaching EPA's purchase requirement.

Communities can garner a number of benefits as a result of buying green power:

  1. Reduce the community’s carbon footprint
  2. Increase community pride
  3. Protect the environment
  4. Engage businesses, environmental organizations, and citizens
  5. Earn national recognition as an EPA GPC
  6. Receive two street signs indicating your community’s designation as a GPC
