The 10th National Green Power Marketing Conference is taking place in Austin, Texas, October 24-26, at the Austin Marriott at the Capitol. This year's conference will celebrate and build on a decade of success by examining the growth of green power markets, with a particular emphasis on communicating "best practices" for product design and marketing, as well as on program implementation. This year’s conference also includes a pre-conference training session, “Green Power Marketing 101,” on Sunday afternoon, October 23, as well as the 2005 Green Power Leadership Awards banquet, which will take place Monday evening, October 24.
Additional information—including registration details—is available on the Conference Web site.
Sector Spotlight: EPA Speaks to Colleges and Universities at Higher Education Conferences
Colleges and universities across the country are buying green power to reduce the environmental impacts associated with their electricity use. EPA and several Partners—Harvard University, the University of Colorado-Boulder, and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh—spoke this summer about their experiences with green power at the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) 2005 Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland, and the Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers’ Leadership Forum in Orlando, Florida.
There are currently more than 41 Partners from the Higher Education sector, with a combined purchase of more than 250,000 MWh annually. See the Partnership’s Higher Education fact sheet.
Green Power Partnership at Upcoming Industry Events
The Green Power Partnership will be participating in the following events:
Edison Electric Institute (EEI), October 16-19, in Dallas, Texas
National Association of Environmental Managers (NAEM) October 19-21, in Phoenix, Arizona

Partners Making Headlines with Green Power Purchasing
Below is a sample of recent news releases. Partners can send clippings or news releases to Kendall Youngblood (kyoungblood@icfconsulting.com) for posting on the Newsroom page of the Partnership Web site.

Partnership Top 25 List Released in July; Next Update in October
The updated list of the Top 25 green power purchasers was released in early July, with the U.S. Air Force once again topping the list. Combined, the Top 25 purchases amount to 1.7 million megawatt-hours (MWh) annually, which is approximately 64 percent of the green power commitments made by all Partners. The list includes the following four new additions: HSBC (#7), Mohawk Paper Mills (#13), Starbucks (#22), and Syracuse University (tied for #23). See the complete list.
The next update will be in October 2005. All new Partner information or updates about existing Partners must be received by September 23 in order to be considered for the October Top 25 List update. Partners with updated green power purchase information for inclusion in the October update should contact Anthony Amato (anthony.amato@erg.com).
Mohawk Fine Papers Increases Green Power Purchase and Qualifies for Leadership Club
Making the Top 25 List for the first time is New York-based Mohawk
Fine Papers. Mohawk Paper Mills recently announced that it has
become the nation’s No. 2 purchaser of wind power among manufacturers,
second only to Johnson & Johnson. Mohawk Fine Papers recently
purchased an additional 35,000 kilowatt-hours of wind power for
its plant in Hamilton, Ohio. Mohawk Paper Mills was already purchasing
wind power for its two mills in New York, as well as in Ohio. As
a result of this recent additional purchase, Mohawk has qualified
for the Partnership’s Green Power Leadership Club. See Mohawk’s
press release. ![]()
Energy Bill Calls for Increased Federal Purchases of Renewable Energy
The Energy Policy Act of 2005, signed into law by President Bush on August 8, calls for the Secretary of Energy to "ensure that, to the extent economically feasible and technically practicable," 3 percent of the electric energy consumed by the federal government in fiscal years 2007 through 2009 be derived from renewable sources, increasing to 5 percent in fiscal years 2010 through 2012, and 7.5 percent by 2013 and each fiscal year thereafter. The new law expands upon Executive Order 13123, issued in 1999, which established a goal for federal agencies to obtain 2.5 percent of their electricity from renewable energy sources by 2005. Recently, the Federal Energy Management Program issued guidance to federal agencies regarding renewable energy purchases. The federal government is the nation’s single largest green power purchaser (see the Partnership’s Top 25 list for additional details).
Updating Green Power Partnership Program Requirements
EPA is currently developing updates for Green Power Partnership Program requirements to reflect recent changes in the green power market. Issues under consideration include minimum purchase requirements for both the Partnership and the Leadership Club, the "new renewables” requirement, environmental claims, and third-party verification. Proposed updated standards will be released for comment in early September for Partner, provider, and other stakeholders' review. Keep your eyes open for an e-mail that will announce the comment period. We look forward to receiving your feedback.
