Whole Foods in the News; Company Looks to Put Wind in Sales Through Green Power Purchase

Whole Foods Markets recently made major headlines across the country when it announced a landmark purchase of renewable energy credits from wind farms to offset 100 percent of the electricity used in all of its stores, facilities, bake houses, distribution centers, regional offices, and national headquarters in the United States and Canada. As a result of this purchase, Whole Foods is the largest-ever corporate purchaser of renewable energy credits in the nation.

If your company or organization has recently been featured in the media, please e-mail press coverage for posting on the Partnership Web site to Anthony Amato (anthony.amato@erg.com, 617-357-4630).

Air Force Leads Partnership on Final 2005 Top 25 List Released in January; Next Update in April

The final 2005 list of the top 25 green power purchasers, highlighting the largest U.S. purchasers in the Green Power Partnership, was released in mid-January. The U.S. Air Force maintained its spot as the top purchaser of green power nationally—a rank that it has held since the Partnership's first Top 25 list in September 2004. The big news coming out of this updated list is the new top corporate purchaser, Whole Foods Markets. Previously No. 8 on the Top 25 list, Whole Foods is now the largest U.S. corporate purchaser of renewable energy credits. Other movement within the Top 25 list includes: Starbucks claiming the No. 6 position overall and becoming the third largest corporate purchaser and FedEx Kinko's climbing to No.19 from its previous position as No. 24.

The next Top 25 update will be posted to the Partnership's Web site in April 2006. All new Partner information and updates from existing Partners must be received by March 27 to be reflected in the April 2006 update. Partners with updated green power purchase information for inclusion in the April update should contact Anthony Amato (anthony.amato@erg.com, 617-357-4630).

Cisco Systems Qualifies for Leadership Club

Cisco Systems, Inc. has qualified for the Green Power Leadership Club. Cisco is purchasing 49,000 MWh of green electricity for its San Jose and Santa Clara facilities, which is 8.8 percent of its national load. Cisco joined the Partnership this month.

The Green Power Leadership Club honors Partners that have made exemplary green power purchases significantly exceeding minimum Green Power Partnership purchase requirements.

Personnel Changes at the Partnership

Kurt Johnson, who was with the Green Power Partnership since its inception in 2001, has recently accepted a detail assignment with the California Public Utility Commission (CPUC) in the San Francisco Bay Area. Over the years, Kurt has played an important role in the success of the Green Power Partnership and has tirelessly supported the green power market since the early 1990s. Kurt's contributions to the Partnership will be remembered as both lasting and appreciated.

In his new role, Kurt will be working in support of the CPUC's California Solar Initiative, the nation's largest ever solar program—a 10-year, $2.9 billion initiative with the goal of increasing the amount of installed solar capacity in California by 3,000 MW by 2017. We wish Kurt the best with this new opportunity.

With Kurt's departure, the Green Power Partnership has a large hole to fill. At this time we would like to welcome our newest member, James Critchfield. James will be handling a number of issues formerly covered by Kurt, including the National Green Power Marketing Conference, Green Power Leadership Awards, Partnership media and press releases, and Partnership newsletters, among other things.

As part of this reshuffle of personnel, Blaine Collison will assume all duties relating to Partner account management, recruiting, and outreach. Matt Clouse will work with marketers, utilities, provider account management, green power standards development, green power communities, and program administrative duties.
