PepsiCo Becomes Largest Green Power Buyer
PepsiCo claimed the top spot on EPA’s Top 25 list of the nation’s largest buyers of green power after committing to more than 1.1 billion kilowatt-hours annually for 100 percent of its U.S. operations. As the largest purchase under EPA’s Green Power Partnership, the purchase represents enough electricity to power roughly 90,000 average American homes each year. Besides ranking No. 1 on the National Top 25 list, PepsiCo now leads EPA’s Fortune 500 Green Power Challenge and EPA’s new “100 Percent Green Power Purchasers” lists.
"America is shifting to a "green culture," with more and more businesses understanding that environmental responsibility is everyone's responsibility," said EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson. "By switching to alternative, renewable power sources, PepsiCo is proving that going green can be the choice of every generation."
PepsiCo’s announcement produced extensive media coverage from global, national, local, and industry media. Philadelphia Eagles Expand “Go Green” Campaign; Reimburses Employees for Buying Green Power
The Philadelphia Eagles have gotten greener, and we’re not talking about the color of their uniforms. The NFL franchise has expanded its “Go Green” campaign that it launched in 2003 to better the environment and encourage sustainable business practices as core operating principles.
At a news conference in April, Eagles owner Christina Lurie announced that the Eagles will reimburse their employees for buying wind energy who are living in the Philadelphia region and New Jersey. The Eagles believe they are one of the first organizations to pick up this cost for its employees, and expect to get at least 100 employees to participate.
“We hope to serve as an example for NFL teams and the corporate sector,” said Lurie. “The topic of greening in sports is especially important in cities like Philadelphia with professional teams and sports arenas. Game days have a huge environmental impact considering traffic, trash, energy and material consumption, and water use. They are also opportunities for education and awareness.”
Eagles Buy Green Power for their Operations
The Philadelphia Eagles are also buying green power for their operations. They are buying more than 5.8 million kilowatt-hours of green power, representing 26 percent of their annual purchased electricity use. The purchase has earned the Eagles recognition as a Green Power Partner as well as a Green Power Leadership Club member.
The “Go Green” campaign includes recycling at Eagles’ home games, which encourages fans to “take one for the team” and protect the environment. The Eagles have also developed a Web site that explains the organization’s leadership among professional sports teams around sustainability and environmental leadership:
“‘Go Green’ is more than just a play on words for the Eagles,” said Lurie. “‘Go Green’ has become both a rallying cry for the football team and we hope a good citizenship message for the community.”
Lady Liberty Gets Greener with Green Power Purchase
The Statue of Liberty and several other federal facilities in northern New Jersey, owned by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), are buying 100 percent renewable power. GSA announced it is buying 27 million kilowatt-hours of wind Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) over the next three years for the Statue of Liberty and the Ellis Island Immigration Museum on Ellis Island. The National Park Service manages both landmarks.
GSA has been buying roughly 75 million kilowatt-hours of green power for facilities across the United States, or about 33 percent of GSA’s purchased electricity use.
Did you know? The Statue of Liberty's face was said to be modeled after the sculptor's mother, Charlotte. Her copper skin gives her a green appearance because of the weathering effects of standing outside. Some have even said that Lady Liberty is even greener now that she is powered on green electricity!

The conference is the industry’s main annual gathering attended by leading renewable energy and green power industry stakeholders. Green Power Leadership Awards Nomination Period Is Open; Deadline July 6, 2007
The 12th National Renewable Energy Marketing Conference provides a forum for the Seventh Annual National Green Power Leadership Awards banquet. The green power awards will recognize the actions of individuals, companies, and organizations that are significantly advancing the development of renewable electricity sources through green power markets.
EPA, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and the Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) are sponsoring the Seventh Annual Green Power Leadership Awards. All renewable energy buyers, suppliers, organizations, and individuals are invited to submit award nominations. Nomination forms are available on the awards home page at http://www.renewableenergymarketing.net/gp12/awards.htm.
Green Power Leadership Award Nominations Deadline: Friday, July 6, 2007
There are three categories of awards:
- Purchasers — includes Partners or prospective Partners of the Green Power Partnership
- Suppliers — includes renewable electricity providers, renewable energy certificate marketers, and project developers
- Market Development — includes individuals, companies, and other industry leaders

EPA Updates Top Partner Lists in April
In April, EPA updated its Top Partner lists. Each list highlights EPA’s Green Power Partners that have completed the nation’s largest annual voluntary green power purchases. The Green Power Partnership works with hundreds of organizations to buy green power as a means to reduce the environmental impacts of purchased electricity use. More than 700 organizations are voluntarily buying more than 9 billion kilowatt-hours of green power annually.
National Top 25 List
PepsiCo’s record 1.1 billion kilowatt-hour purchase places it as only the second corporation to earn the top spot on EPA’s Top 25 list. Following PepsiCo, Wells Fargo & Company ranks No. 2, and Whole Foods Market No. 3. The U.S. Air Force comes in at No. 4, and Johnson & Johnson rounds out the top five. Other highlights from the April Top 25 list:
- Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts (No. 7) joined the Partnership
- Nike (No. 25) increased its previous purchase, making the list for the first time
100 Percent Green Power Purchaser List
EPA launched its newest Top Partner List—the 100 Percent Green Power Purchaser List. This list features organizations that are buying enough green power to meet 100 percent of their U.S.- purchased electricity use organization-wide. This list includes more than 300 Partner organizations showing environmental leadership—from the largest corporations and government entities, down to some of the smallest organizations and businesses across the United States.
Top 10 Retail List
Whole Foods remains the No. 1 green power buyer among all Retail Partners.
Top 10 College and University List
New York University remains the No. 1 Green Power Partner among Colleges & Universities; the City University of New York (No. 7) increased its purchase to more than 41 million kilowatt-hours.
Top 10 Federal Government List
The U.S. Air Force remains the No. 1 green power buyer among all Federal Agencies; Federal procurement requirements increase starting in 2007 from 2.5 percent up to 3 percent government-wide.
Top 10 Local Government List
Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts takes top spot on Local Government list.
Fortune 500 Green Power Challenge
There are currently 43 Fortune 500 companies taking part in EPA’s Fortune 500 Green Power Challenge. These Partners are collectively buying more than 3.9 billion kilowatt-hours of green power. With PepsiCo joining the Partnership, the company also becomes the No. 1 Fortune 500 Green Power Partner. Also new to the Fortune 500 list is Baxter Healthcare coming in at No. 22. Johnson & Johnson, Nike, and Applied Materials also moved up in the challenge with increased purchases.

Next Top Partner List Update Deadline: July 9, 2007
EPA will next update its Top Partner lists in July 2007. The deadline to submit updated Partner purchase information is July 9, 2007. This deadline is in effect for all of EPA’s Top Partner lists, the Fortune 500 Green Power Challenge, and the College & University Green Power Challenge. EPA Recognizes Champions in Kicking off the Second Annual College & University Challenge
EPA continues to support smart growth and sustainability among colleges and universities through the second annual College & University Green Power Challenge. To be eligible, a conference must include at least one Green Power Partner and have a total green power purchase of at least 10 million kilowatt-hours for the conference.
EPA will recognize the largest single buyer within each eligible conference as 2007-2008 EPA Green Power Challenge conference champions. In addition, EPA will also recognize the members of the single conference with the greatest kilowatt-hour total as the overall champion.
This past year, EPA crowned the Ivy League as the overall champion conference of EPA's College & University Green Power Challenge for 2006-2007. The Ivy League beat out 15 other collegiate athletic conferences. New York University won individual school honors for buying more green power—118 million kilowatt-hours—than any other school in the competition.
Leading the Ivy League was the University of Pennsylvania, followed by Harvard and Yale. The collective total purchase of these three schools ranked the Ivy League first among all conferences, with more than 140 million kilowatt-hours of green power purchased.
Other Challenge highlights include:
- 33 schools and 16 conferences took part in this year's challenge; they are collectively buying more than 750 million kilowatt-hours of green power
- EPA estimates that this amount of green power is equal to the electricity needed to power more than 60,000 average American homes each year

Sector Spotlight: Bellingham, Washington, and Park City, Utah, Have Green Power Community Celebrations
The communities of Bellingham, Washington, and Park City, Utah both had recent Green Power Community celebrations.
The City of Bellingham became Washington State’s first EPA Green Power Community for buying more than 11 percent of the entire community’s electricity from green power resources. Bellingham’s green power campaign places it as the largest EPA green power community by total kilowatt-hours. Bellingham had a community-wide celebration on April 21 to coincide with Earth Day.
EPA also recognized the community of Park City, Utah, as an EPA Green Power Community for buying 3.7 percent of its electricity use community-wide from green power resources. The world-renowned resort town is now Utah’s second EPA Green Power Community and the largest in the state. Park City recently celebrated the EPA recognition during the city’s first Sustainability Week, held during Earth Day.
There are currently a total of seven publicly announced EPA Green Power Communities nationwide. EPA extends the Green Power honor to communities that voluntarily meet or exceed the Agency’s minimum green power purchase requirements. Green Power Community campaigns show the possibilities of collective action and successful partnership between local government, businesses, residents, and local organizations. EPA Green Power Communities include: Boulder, Colo., Palo Alto, Calif., Salem & Corvallis, Ore., Moab & Park City, Utah and Bellingham, Wash.
Texas RPS Update: Legislature Repeals Problematic “Subsection M”
Last month, the Texas Legislature took an important step towards clarifying a provision of the state's renewable energy mandate that had created doubts about whether Texas-sourced RECs would meet the Green Power Partnership's program requirements. The provision in question, known as Subsection (m), appeared to require that all RECs, even those associated with voluntary green power purchases, count towards the state mandate. The bill passed by the Legislature last month removes this problematic provision. Signature by the governor is widely expected. Green-e immediately repealed its Texas Market Advisory on this issue and once again is certifying Texas-sourced RECs.
EPA’s eGRID Emission Rates Database Updated with 2004 Plant level Data
EPA recently released an update to its Emissions & Generation Resource Integrated Database (eGRID), eGRID2006 version 2.1, which contains 2004 U.S. emission factors. The previous eGRID database, eGRID2002, contained data for years 1996 through 2000.
The eGRID database is a comprehensive emissions inventory of environmental attributes of U.S. electric power systems. eGRID provides default emission rates in varying levels of detail, including by generating company, states, North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) regions, and U.S. average.
EPA’s Green Power Partnership uses the eGRID NERC region emissions factors when calculating environmental benefits relating to Partner green power purchases. Users of the database will recognize that many of the regional emissions rates have changed from the previous eGRID2002 version. USG to Host Washington International Renewable Energy Conference March 4-6, 2008
The United States Government, in cooperation with the American Council on Renewable Energy and several leading renewable energy trade associations, will host the Washington International Renewable Energy Conference March 4-6, 2008, at the Washington Convention Center. The global conference will build on previous renewable energy events held in Bonn, Germany in 2004, and Beijing, China in 2005. The conference is designed to:
- Advance energy security, climate change, air quality, and sustainable development goals, including agriculture and rural development.
- Demonstrate global leadership in renewable energy research, policy development, technology innovation, commercialization, and deployment.
- Foster industry and government collaboration to help solve global energy challenges.
Approximately 5,000 people are expected to attend the event, including delegates from more than 120 countries. The official part of the conference is expected to include a Ministerial Meeting for energy and environment ministers and other high-level stakeholders, as well as three days of plenary and breakout sessions on a wide variety of renewable energy policy, deployment, and financing topics. In addition, a trade show will be co-located with WIREC 2008, and conference organizers anticipate that dozens of official side events will be held by states, foreign governments, NGOs, private companies, and multinational organizations.
