Green Power Planet #6
October 4, 2004

The Green Power Planet provides interested stakeholders the latest information regarding the Green Power Partnership and its Partners. In this edition of the Green Power Planet:

Welcome New Green Power Partners

Partnership Tops 500 Partners, 2 Million MWh of Green Power

The Partnership recently received its 500th Letter of Intent. The Partnership's current total annual green power commitment is now about 2 million megawatt-hours—roughly equal to the annual output of a 750 megawatt windfarm. The Partnership has been growing rapidly since it began in 2001 with 21 founding Partners. Over the last few years, nationwide sales of green power have grown significantly, with purchases by large, nonresidential customers accounting for much of the growth. Nationwide, green power markets are now supporting nearly 2,000 MW of new renewable energy.

2004 Green Power Leadership Award Winners Honored

The 4th National Green Power Leadership Awards are taking place tonight in Albany, New York, in conjunction with the 9th National Green Power Marketing Conference. EPA, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and the Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) are honoring organizations that are significantly advancing development of the green power market. Awards for leadership in green power purchasing are being presented to 19 organizations. The highest honor, the Green Power Partner of the Year Award, will be presented to Montgomery County, Maryland; Staples, Inc.; Silk; Clif Bar; and the U.S. General Services Administration–Region 2. Additional awards for leadership in green power purchasing are being presented to Salt Lake City; Johnson & Johnson; NY Municipal Wind Buyers Group; College of the Atlantic; Whole Foods; Interface, Inc.; Alterra Coffee Roasters; Lundberg Family Farms; Edwards Air Force Base; Harbec Plastics; California State University at Hayward; Mauna Lani Resort; Rodney Strong Vineyards; and the City and County of San Francisco, Moscone Convention Center. Information regarding additional 2004 Green Power Leadership Award winners (PDF) (39 pp, 1.1MB, About PDF) is available on the Green Power Partnership Web site.

Enhanced Green Power Partnership Web Site and Tools

The Green Power Partnership Web site has recently been enhanced to include new features and tools. The Web site now has an expanded section on how to buy green power, more in-depth information about green power products and options, and a new "Top 25" list that identifies the top green power purchasers (by MWh) in the Partnership. The enhanced Web site also includes an updated Procurement Guide, developed collaboratively with DOE, CRS, and the World Resources Institute, and new individualized pages containing Partner profiles. See the new features on the Green Power Partnership Web site.

Partner Spotlight: Staples, Inc.

Staples, Inc., winner of a 2004 Partner of the Year Award, has become a significant national green power leader. Staples began with a commitment to purchase 2 percent of its total electricity from green power sources—an ambitious goal for a large corporation. Recently, Staples has reached 10 percent, with its annual green power purchase now at more than 48,000 MWh annually. With stores across the country, Staples buys green power, including landfill gas, biomass, solar, and wind, from five different green power providers in the form of delivered energy as well as renewable energy credits (RECs). In addition, two of Staples' distribution centers in California are in the process of being powered by on-site solar photovoltaic (PV) installations based on an innovative solar hosting model whereby Staples purchases solar electricity at a fixed price without being required to provide upfront capital costs for the PV systems. Staples is also quickly becoming a leader in its green power communication efforts, educating customers and the general public through in-store signage and press releases. Additional information is available on the Green Power Partnership Web site.
