New Top 25 List Spotlights Nation's Largest Green Power Purchasers

One of the new tools available on the Partnership Web site is a "Top 25 List," which lists Partner green power purchases ranked by size. These Partners are the top green power users in terms of megawatt-hours (MWh) and have agreed to publicly state: (1) the size of the purchase in MWh, (2) the percentage of their electricity offset by green power, and (3) the renewable resources that generate their green power. The first edition of the list debuted on the Web site in October 2004, and the Partnership plans to update the Top 25 list quarterly, with the next two updates scheduled for early January 2005 and April 2005. If you think your organization qualifies as a new Top 25 Partner, please contact us by January 7, 2005 to provide us with your organization's updated information.

Partner Spotlight: U.S. Air Force is Nation’s Largest Green Power Purchaser

The United States Air Force recently became the largest Green Power Partner, with a combined total commitment to purchase over 300,000 MWh of green power annually. The Air Force’s organization-wide purchasing represents about 15 percent of all commitments to buy green power in the Partnership. The large commitment comes after a number of recent significant green power purchasing announcements. The U.S. Air Force’s Edward Air Force Base already tops the Green Power Partnership’s Top 25 list of green power purchasers, with a commitment to purchase 138,000 MWh. Both Edwards Air Force Base (in 2004) and Dyess Air Force Base (in 2003) have won Green Power Leadership Awards in recognition of their outstanding purchases. In addition to the two award winning bases, seven other U.S. Air Force bases have purchased green power and joined the Partnership, including Cannon, Ellsworth, Fairchild, Goodfellow, Laughlin, Minot, and Sheppard.

EPA Now 70 Percent Green-Powered

EPA recently completed green power procurements for its Washington, DC, facilities, including the purchase of renewable energy certificates for the Agency’s offices at 1310 L Street in downtown Washington. Over the past five years, EPA has been steadily increasing its green power purchases, now involving 20 EPA laboratory and office buildings nationwide. EPA currently procures over 200,000 MWh of green power annually, representing 70 percent of EPA’s total national electricity requirements.

Moab, Utah, Honored as First Green Power Community

EPA recognized Utah's Greater Moab Community on November 6, as the nation's first Green Power Community. The Greater Moab Community includes the towns of Moab, Castle Valley, Pack Creek Ranch, and Spanish Valley. Collectively, these towns became the first community in the nation to meet and exceed the EPA Green Power Partnership's minimum benchmark for green power usage with voluntary purchases on a community-wide basis. Green Power Communities is a new pilot program of the Green Power Partnership, and is intended to motivate the collective action of both businesses and residents to help communities meet the Partnership’s minimum purchasing levels.

Through the combined effort of business, residents, and local governments, the Moab area has offset more than 4 percent of the entire community's electricity purchase by purchasing green power. "We are honored and excited to be 'first in the nation' as a green power community," commented Moab Mayor David Sakrison. "This designation clearly symbolizes our community's commitment to both the development of renewable energy technologies and protecting our environment." The City of Moab was a Green Power Leadership Award winner in 2003.
