GPP Updates Top Partner Rankings
On October 22, GPP updated its Top Partner Rankings to reflect the latest numbers in Partners' green power use. The biggest mover on both the National Top 50 and Top 20 Local Government lists was the District of Columbia. Now using enough green power to cover 100 percent of its overall electricity use for the city's facilities, D.C. has vaulted to the number one spot on the Top 20 Local Government list and the number seven spot on the National Top 50 list. You can review all the lists on the GPP website.
A recent addition to GPP's Top Partner Rankings is the Top 30 Tech & Telecom list, which debuted in July 2012. With today's update, Samsung Electronics, Ltd. joined the list for the first time, and Datapipe, Inc., SAP America, Applied Materials, Apple Computers (Austin, TX facilities), and Pitney Bowes all increased their green power usage.
Did You Know?
Combined, the partners featured on the Top 20 Tech & Telecom list are using more than 5 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually. That's the equivalent of avoiding the carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity use of more than 441,000 American homes!
College and University Green Power Challenge
The Partnership also updated the rankings for the 2012-13 College and University Green Power Challenge, which saw a few changes. Breaking into the top ten for the first time is the Northeast-10 Conference thanks to Bentley University's recent green power purchase of 25 million kWh. In addition, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville increased its green power use and as a result, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) joined the Challenge for the first time.
By the Numbers
The institutions participating in the 2012-13 College and University Challenge are cumulatively using more than 1.8 billion kWh of green power. That's equivalent to avoiding the emissions from more than 246,000 passenger vehicles!
Green Power Community Challenge – Join Us!
The Green Power Community Challenge is back for 2012-13! The GPC Challenge is a national, year-long campaign that encourages communities nationwide to use renewable energy and fight climate change. Out of 35 competing GPCs, the winners for 2011-12 were the communities of Washington, D.C. (for highest overall green power usage) and Oak Park, Illinois (for highest percentage of green power). For details and information on how to participate, visit the 2012-2013 Green Power Community Challenge homepage.
