Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD), a 2002 Green Power Leadership Award winner, recognizes the potential environmental impacts of global climate change and the need to take precautionary action to protect the global environment. AMD set a goal to reduce carbon emissions from its manufacturing operations by 15 percent by 2005. Shortly after its first purchase of renewable energy in 2000, natural gas prices soared and became even more costly than the fixed green power premium. By 2001, AMD saved approximately $100,000 from its green power procurement and, in response, doubled the company's purchase for the following year. AMD is currently purchasing over 73 million kWh of clean, renewable energy each year from a Texas wind farm.
